The story we’re being told doesn’t add up. He was obviously robbed.

My whole family is on Life360. Even teen and adult kids. It’s for our peace of mind. I worry. Wish I didn’t , but I do.

Obviously, he was robbed and then decided to go for a swim as one does in those situations.

You are all speculating, and your speculation is distorted by racism, paranoia, anxiety, and xenophobia.

Sadly, the most likely scenario -- the one supported by actual video evidence -- is that the poor kid was intoxicated and disoriented and the victim of a terrible accident. And that's it.

No tech, no phone, no laptop, no tablet, no gps, no internet, nothing. The only thing I had was my first digital camera that I had bought for the trip.

Every ten days or so I would find an internet cafe and send my family a message saying where I was and what countries or cities I was planning to head to next. This was the 1990s and no one thought much of this.

One of the best years of my life.

Yes, and no one else did this in the 1990s.

I don't think that was the poster's point. I think the point was the poster survived and thrived without constant surveillance by anxious parents. It can be done.

I mean my grandpa was born in 1930 and didn’t get vaccinated for anything and he didn’t die, he still got vaccines when the became available tho.

Not a good analogy, sorry.

Having a cell phone and checking in regularly is one thing. Tracking your student at all times is another.

Nobody here is talking about going full Homeland with a kid widget in the corner of the screen. You’re very prone to hyperbole.

Helicopter Mom: "Back home in the states I could see on Life 360 that he hadn’t moved from the club in 7 hours. Waited for the club to close and when he didn’t move, knew there was a problem."

Sounds full Homeland to me.

I don’t how what the issue is with location tracking your kid. I location track mine and I’m really not a helicopter mom. My kid did all their college apps without my involvement — I never saw or read any of them. They pick their classes and activities and I don’t generally know where they are going or why but I will check their location on my phone and text them with a hey — your in Boston this weekend? What’s up? And they’ll text back and I’ll say have fun! We started location sharing when they were 14 and I never turned it off. I think they don’t mind because I am low key about most stuff. They don’t really have secrets from me because I don’t police their behavior. I probably would check it more if they were in a foreign country.

You DEFINITELY are a helicopter mom. And one that tries to sound cool, but is clearly very neurotic. Very sad to see.

I’m sorry it makes you sad. My kids are super independent — find their own schools, do their own work, find their own jobs with no involvement from me. Have been taking the bus and metro independently since they were 11, and fly on planes and travel infepceny as well. It’s possible they don’t mind the location sharing because they know they are allowed to go wherever they want and I don’t weigh in on their life choices? To me, that’s a helicopter mom—the ones that inhibits independence due to pverinvovement but maybe I’ve misunderstood the term.

Were his clothes off? That to me makes it more likely that he took them off to go to swim and someone stole the wallet out of the pants on beach. No one is gojng to rob you of your pants.

Most logical scenario for me:

Was possibly drugged and wallet/Phone stolen (or just really intoxicated.)

Then went to the edge of the water to pee and fell in.

Very sad.

What about the cellphone? Did he sell it?

Yeah migrant crime is not a thing at all in Europe. /s

Barcelona is overflowing with criminals and scammers preying on drunken vacationers.

Just because his wallet was found in the water doesn’t rule out foul play. A seasoned criminal would take the Euros and/or credit cards out and quickly discard the wallet. A migrant was found with his phone. A migrant just murdered a college girl on a Chicago beach late at night less than a week ago.

It’s disgusting how everyone is trying soft glove getting robbed of your phone, acting like pickpocketing is some harmless victimless thing you’re just supposed to shrug off as someone on holiday.

Without a phone you not only lack the ability to communicate with friends, you lack maps and GPS, you lack money if you were using digital payment apps, and you lack the ability to order an uber.

If he was robbed of his phone the persons responsible should be charged with manslaughter at the very least.

I have not seen it reported anywhere that the person arrested with his phone was/ is a migrant. Of course this is a detail the media might overlook but PP can you provide a citation?

The drunk at 3am part did not help. Getting robbed of your phone sober in broad daylight is a much different situation.

All of this. 💯 agree. So many of these responses are absolutely disgusting.

It’s a crime whether in broad daylight or in the dead of night. Quit victim blaming. He’s a kid FFS and he’s not the only kid targeted in Barcelona recently, just the only one who didn’t come home. Parents, think twice before sending your kid to study abroad. Sadly Europe is not what it used to be. Been there done that. Never again.
