What I find absolutely disgusting is that many of these attendance islands were due to deals struck with developers. The developers wanted to get top dollar for their developments so they advocated (likely with political donations) to have the islands go to the more desirable school.

Now that those developers have cashed in, the next generation of developers on the FPAC are here to get rid of those same attendance islands to try to make room at some schools for further development so that the developers can cash in further off of the county.

Don’t trust any of those FPAC members. They are in it for número uno, not the students.

PP should have added “Republican operatives” although many of them live in Great Falls as well.

The author of that piece traffics in rumors, not facts.

Which facts in the article are wrong?
The data?
That new standards are imminent?

The “chronic absenteeism” reported is no different than half the schools in Fairfax County. It’s been a county-wide problem since COVID. The high drop out rate is a problem, but, among those that remain, academics are strong, according to the FCPS SOL data linked in the article.

Also, both my kid and I (a teacher) missed 5 days of school in the fall of 2023 (last school year) because we HAD to take 5 days for COVID. Add that to the regular sick absences and my straight A kid had lots of letters about attendance.

The COVID rule was only lifted in March of 2024 so it was still affecting attendance last year.

Once again schools get to be a political whipping boy.

"Thank you for your email. I appreciate you sharing your time and thoughts. No specific boundaries have been discussed at this point in the process, and as far as I know currently, there are no specific plans to move Hunt Valley to the Lewis pyramid.

Please know that as we move through this process, I will be advocating for kids across the Springfield district. Thank you for your patience as we determine the path ahead. Communities will have time and space to input just these types of suggestions with the Superintendent’s robust community engagement. I will definitely make sure that I am publicizing all those opportunities through my newsletter as they arise.

In the meantime, continue to check the FCPS website for current information. The site will be updated with a timeline after it is presented to the Board. The Superintendent couldn't set a timeline in place until the policy was approved, so the Board is awaiting that proposal.

Thank you,
Sandy"

When she emailed me back, she used her canned response about why she was so confused that people were so focused on Hunt Valley. That gave me some comfort, as a HV family, but yeah, she's definitely on board for some people getting switched. The question remains who.

I hear two things.

First, don't think you're going to avoid boundary changes just because the West Springfield parents are the noisiest people in my district. My duty is to represent everyone in my district.

Second, chill out, because the next thing that Dr. Reid is likely to present is more information about the timeline and process going forward, not specific boundary change proposals.

My concerns expressed to the SB:
I would like to express concern for the proposed bussing of HVES students to Lewis HS.

A traffic viability study needs to be conducted. Busses and drivers driving by WSHS, going through the Mixing Bowl, during both rush hours makes no sense. The increase in accidents from student drivers alone will impact a lot of commuters. Lewis also has limited parking for student parking, how will parking be accommodated?

Is WSHS going to give up it's Purple Star designation now that a predominantly military neighborhood is forced to bus out of the neighborhood school? Is FCPS willing to give up Purple Star recognition for forcing military families to bus for equity?

I would like to see a detailed plan for providing comparable AP courses and languages, as WSHS provides, to all students at Lewis HS. IB is not compatible with Virginia college-bound families.

It is nice that you hear that. I agree with your first thought.

Your second, however is crap. As parents, we have been saving for college since birth or pre-birth even. We have been told the importance of extra-curricular activities and have done our best to set our children up for success. We have heard about the importance of leadership positions and building your resume in high school

Those are things we have thought about for YEARS.

Don’t tell us “not to freak out” when the board just voted to not guarantee grandfathering for our kids who are in middle and lower grades of high school.

We have been thinking about this and it is our job as parents to think about this.

The language on grandfathering was carried forward more or less verbatim from the existing policy. You wanted new guarantees written into the policy, and that didn’t happen, but it doesn’t necessarily mean people won’t be sensitive to the negatives if there were an actual proposal to require kids to switch HS.

Many HV parents not all have the means of sending their kids to private school. Therefore, this may not have the intended effect of what Dr. Anderson is allegedly trying to achieve.

Incorrect. I’ve always voted democrat. This is an extreme school board.

This is a very different democatic party down to the local level from 2008.

I think the cabal of military-affiliated HVES parents will see to it that this proposal will remain just this - a proposal.

HV neighborhood and its school pyramid is a draw for newly-arrived military families through word of mouth and solid reputation for over 50 years. It’s an unusually tight knit community.
