"Thank you for your email. I appreciate you sharing your time and thoughts. No specific boundaries have been discussed at this point in the process, and as far as I know currently, there are no specific plans to move Hunt Valley to the Lewis pyramid.

Please know that as we move through this process, I will be advocating for kids across the Springfield district. Thank you for your patience as we determine the path ahead. Communities will have time and space to input just these types of suggestions with the Superintendent’s robust community engagement. I will definitely make sure that I am publicizing all those opportunities through my newsletter as they arise.

In the meantime, continue to check the FCPS website for current information. The site will be updated with a timeline after it is presented to the Board. The Superintendent couldn't set a timeline in place until the policy was approved, so the Board is awaiting that proposal.

Thank you,
Sandy"

I hear two things.

First, don't think you're going to avoid boundary changes just because the West Springfield parents are the noisiest people in my district. My duty is to represent everyone in my district.

Second, chill out, because the next thing that Dr. Reid is likely to present is more information about the timeline and process going forward, not specific boundary change proposals.

It is nice that you hear that. I agree with your first thought.

Your second, however is crap. As parents, we have been saving for college since birth or pre-birth even. We have been told the importance of extra-curricular activities and have done our best to set our children up for success. We have heard about the importance of leadership positions and building your resume in high school

Those are things we have thought about for YEARS.

Don’t tell us “not to freak out” when the board just voted to not guarantee grandfathering for our kids who are in middle and lower grades of high school.

We have been thinking about this and it is our job as parents to think about this.

The language on grandfathering was carried forward more or less verbatim from the existing policy. You wanted new guarantees written into the policy, and that didn’t happen, but it doesn’t necessarily mean people won’t be sensitive to the negatives if there were an actual proposal to require kids to switch HS.

Trusting a school board that has:
- not run on redistricting but decided to change the policy
-wasting time and money seeing if at/over capacity middle schools can handle more grades
-didn’t even bother writing grandfathering into the policy until THE DAY OF THE VOTE
- claiming to be all about mental health and then refusing to acknowledge the huge mental health issue of switching kids in the middle of high school

Trusting that same school board to make a sensitive proposal is a bit difficult at the moment.

When she emailed me back, she used her canned response about why she was so confused that people were so focused on Hunt Valley. That gave me some comfort, as a HV family, but yeah, she's definitely on board for some people getting switched. The question remains who.

She is the living embodiment of the left going too far.

You are the living embodiment of a right wing sheep.

Incorrect. I’ve always voted democrat. This is an extreme school board.

I would like to express concern for the proposed bussing of HVES students to Lewis HS.

A traffic viability study needs to be conducted. Busses and drivers driving by WSHS, going through the Mixing Bowl, during both rush hours makes no sense. The increase in accidents from student drivers alone will impact a lot of commuters. Lewis also has limited parking for student parking, how will parking be accommodated?

Is WSHS going to give up it's Purple Star designation now that a predominantly military neighborhood is forced to bus out of the neighborhood school? Is FCPS willing to give up Purple Star recognition for forcing military families to bus for equity?

I would like to see a detailed plan for providing comparable AP courses and languages, as WSHS provides, to all students at Lewis HS. IB is not compatible with Virginia college-bound families.

+ 1000. Also, schools with a certain number of military-connected students have an assigned MFLC (military family life counselor) that provides additional mental health services to military-connected students. This is paid for by DOD, not the county. The toll of frequent moves and deployments does impact military connected students in a unique way. It is possible that moving HVES out of the WSHS pyramid could lead to WSHS losing their MFLC, which would negatively impact the military students that remain and remove that resource.

Lamentably, the school board doesn’t care about military families, only farms families.

Because democrats without kids are uninformed or not impacted by the decisions of the school board, so everything sounds like a good idea.

Many of them actually want exactly that. They see it as a way of disrupting the status quo and that they are doing something honorable in the name of social justice.

Obviously it is a joke. I think it is so lame that people give a shit about “democrat” vs “democratic”. Republicans are definitely in folks’ heads. And I say that, once again, as someone who has always voted blue.

Do.

I believe in recent years that republicans make a point of saying “democrat party” but this is the first time I have seen someone suggest that using the phrase “voting democrat”‘is a republican thing.

Don’t believe me at your own peril, Sandy. I always vote and always voted Blue. You may not want to believe that there are democrats that don’t believe in equity at all cost, but there are many more of us than you can afford to lose, at least at the state level.
