Same here. It became pretty clear within a month or two that the people getting really sick or dying were a very different demographic than me or my kids. Went back to pretty much normal life as soon as we could after that.

And it should have been apparent to the so-called experts that we needed to focus our efforts tor protect the most vulnerable. Instead, they let the elderly die while lying to the rest of us that a 25 year-old athlete needed to live under the same restrictions as a 70-year old with COPD.

I agree that cases, hospitalizations and deaths will tick upwards in the next few weeks because wastewater levels are rising and there is an uptick in other parts of the world. It's hard for experts to predict exactly how much of a surge will occur in the U.S. but I expect there will be one. Thankfully, there are a lot of tools for anyone who is at high risk to protect themselves (masks and access to test results and antivirals). Hopefully, with the increased availability of Paxlovid and other treatments, those who are immunocompromised should not need to worry about people being unmasked around them.

Americans are selfish and reject science when it affects their lifestyle.
They claim to have Christian values but don’t care about their fellow man at all.
I’ve found the human response to Covid to be very sad. I feel a little depression all the time that people care so little about others.

A. Grocery stores have never been hotbeds of transmission because people aren't interacting with each other for long periods of time and the vast majority of people do not have COVID (exception was during the Omicron surge). Most people I've seen are still wearing masks in these settings, as am I, because what's the big deal, but I wear a cloth mask since I don't want to waste my respirators that are actually effective. Honestly, my cloth mask is just for show.
B. Wearing a mask for hours each day is a different matter. Most people insisting that children or others continue to mask all day long, do not have to do so themselves. While COVID cases are low, it makes a lot of sense to give people a break, since masking does NOT eliminate transmission and very few people even have COVID so their mask is not protecting anybody.

I wouldn't be so sure about that. Masks were pretty low when Omicron came, our first case of Omicron picked it up at the grocery store (because that was the only place they went). Masks only work if most people wear them. This was with a KN95.

Well, I guess you've solved it with your highly scientific anecdote :: Where I live people never stopped wearing masks at the grocery store.

It was reported that Maryland has crossed the 14,000 deaths from COVID benchmark recently. It did make me pause because it seems like a very low number relative to what we went through in the last two years. There are more than 6,000,000 Marylanders, and the 14k deaths were heavily concentrated among the elderly with health issues. I'm sure a decent percentage would have likely died by now from something else had they never gotten infected from COVID.

When I see the cold hard numbers in front of me, it does make me realize how much of what we went through in the last two years was driven by little more than hysteria and fear far more than what was needed. We'd have been much better off with a very different approach to COVID targeted to the high risk demographics.

This. Also compare the numbers to other causes of death. Can you imagine how much better off if we had instead focused on reducing obesity across the country?
