Nope. Plenty of private schools families don’t understand why in the world Maret doesn’t own their own fields the way their schools do.

+1 Agreed. The private school families I know (Sidwell, GDS, Cathedral Schools) think Maret is being cheap and shady by not spending to buy its own fields. GDS and Sidwell are all in the process of major campus expansions, so changes in campus plans are possible when you don't have the infrastructure in your existing campus.

GDS (after it’s sleazy real estate deal) accusing another school of being “cheap and shady”?’ That’s the definition of chutzpah.

Maret has a large playing field. If your kids play rec soccer, chances are they have played at Maret. (You’re welcome.). Unlike DC schools which are separated on different sites into elementary, middle and high schools, Maret has all three divisions on the same modest-sized campus. So the one field is not adequate during peak outdoor sports seasons. The historic landmark designation and a DC regulatory ore debt effectively precludes Maret from developing its front yard into another field.

And Hardy has no field. And unlike private schools, it's the city's job to provide facilities for public schools.

Why does Maret expect others to make up for its inadequacies? Is this what they teach their students?

Bury the parking and turf it for a field like Sidwell did.

+1. Does anyone know who does planning for Maret? I would like to send them a note asking them to do their job in the next year so they can get their own facility.

And you could send a contribution as well.

But Hardy parents are afraid to ask DCPS for a proper field because they say in DCPS the school system doesn’t listen to the parents; it’s the other way around. The cheap solution is to eliminate staff parking and tell them to take the bus like working stiffs in the neighborhood. The more expensive solution is to have DCPS out staff parking under a field. Janney, Murch, Duke Friggin’ Ellington all got underground parking. Is Hardy just not worthy?

Of course, the most logical and cost-effective solution is for Hardy to use the city-owned field across the street.

Actually it is to use the nearby underutilized field that is already owned by DCPS. They could have it as their home field if they wanted.

The cheapest solution is for Maret to provide underground parking for its staff and pave and turf the result - like Sidwell did. Is Maret not as worthy or wealthy as Sidwell?

Wow. Maret parents can go lower. I guess money doesn’t buy class.

The Maret parents here are really embarrassing themselves and the school. I feel bad for the sane parents.

Why is it the "right thing" for DPR to have to make arrangements for DCPS students' after school activities? It's a different agency, not responsible for students.

As I said, those of you making moral judgments here appear to be unfamiliar with the way local governments are organized, and operate.

Because public facilities should not be pay to play.

Because a rich organization should not be able to have exclusive access to public fields.

Because the govt has the responsibility of maintaining fields and providing fair access to all.

Because no one group should get to monopolize a public field.

Amen. It's a shame that Muriel Bowser can't realize this. But public parks should be public, and not open to whatever privileged group makes the biggest "donation."
