Maret is getting the support of the DC private school community. Maret feels unfairly maligned but some of the invective against them Maret-Jelleff arrangement seems to be vitriol directed at private schools in general. There are thousands of parents and students in the independent school community who live in our Nation’s Capital, the majority of them west of Rock Creek Park. Who do you think will carry more weight with Mary Cheh? Maret and other independent school parents or Hardy parents, a minority of whom live WOTP?
Nope. Plenty of private schools families don’t understand why in the world Maret doesn’t own their own fields the way their schools do.
Maret has a large playing field. If your kids play rec soccer, chances are they have played at Maret. (You’re welcome.). Unlike DC schools which are separated on different sites into elementary, middle and high schools, Maret has all three divisions on the same modest-sized campus. So the one field is not adequate during peak outdoor sports seasons. The historic landmark designation and a DC regulatory ore debt effectively precludes Maret from developing its front yard into another field.
And Hardy has no field. And unlike private schools, it's the city's job to provide facilities for public schools.
But Hardy parents are afraid to ask DCPS for a proper field because they say in DCPS the school system doesn’t listen to the parents; it’s the other way around. The cheap solution is to eliminate staff parking and tell them to take the bus like working stiffs in the neighborhood. The more expensive solution is to have DCPS out staff parking under a field. Janney, Murch, Duke Friggin’ Ellington all got underground parking. Is Hardy just not worthy?
Of course, the most logical and cost-effective solution is for Hardy to use the city-owned field across the street.
Actually it is to use the nearby underutilized field that is already owned by DCPS. They could have it as their home field if they wanted.
