Schools need to reopen to get these kids back in the classroom and we need to invest in the social workers and support systems that would help prevent future tragedies. My heart breaks for them.

We appreciate your including one sentence for the victim and his family. The rest of your response suggests far more sympathy for the girls. That's cold.

I feel for both parties in this tragedy. That is possible.

The video of the carjacking is on social media (I won't link to it but it's not hard to find). Horrifying. Those girls should be sent away for a long time.

You should watch the video of the incident before posting something like this. You know, just so you actually see what you’re talking about.

Anything that equates to a slap on the wrist is not good for the girls, their families, and certainly not the victim's family. These girls committed the ultimately crime and took an innocent life. They need to be seriously punished. And, a lax punishment would send a horrible message to any other would-be teenage carjackers. It is absolutely horrific and I cannot imagine what this man's family is going through.

Literally forever.

In the video, one of the perpetrators, after murdering the man and literally standing next to his dead body, scream, "my phone is still in the car!"

Wow just wowwwwww

Not only did she have a cell phone, her braids were done, and had the latest gear on too. There's no hope for them. The state should take away any other children in the home.

Jesus, I just saw the video.

I'm ok with these girls suffering. Honestly, totally and completely ok with it and having their lives permanently destroyed for ending the life of another human being.

I have more sympathy for a drug dealer who, at the end of the day, is just trying to make a living - even if it's a dangerous (and endangering) one.

Carjacking like this is beyond senseless, and any 13/15 year old with an iota of brain cell function knows this.

Karl Racine and Charles Allen should maybe at some point be asked the tough questions about the rampant juvenile crime in the District.

They should focus on the rampant inequality that exists in the city/country and the rampant lack of opportunities for people in certain communities.

They do. There are programs galore. Summer programs. Snap benefits. Ebt. There are services. At some point, the soft bigotry of low expectations needs to end. Where is the accountability??? Fking stop killing people.

+10000

These girls had much, much more privilege that so many others. Likely WAY more privilege than the Pakistani delivery driver had growing up, or his family does at home. But I'd bet they never carjacked and killed a person just to get what they wanted for some moronic reason, being the entitled morons they were.

I don't feel sorry for these kids - so many people grow up with far worse, in far worse conditions, and never do an iota of the crime or harm to others.

+ 1 Well said.

Another +1. A firm line needs to be drawn.

CNN called it an “accident” which most viewers would believe because most will never see the video. Wow.

Yet more evidence of CNN’s journalistic bankruptcy. They’re done.

Can’t believe it...well, actually I can. The “phone” is one girls biggest concern after she car jacks the car, crashes it, and kills a man. Send her away for life. She can earn weekly phone privileges in prison.

For all those people wringing their hands and crying "the girls are victims, too!!! I can have sadness for both parties!", you should see the video and watch one of the young women screaming that her phone is still in the car while Mohammed dies on the sidewalk two feet away.

Here is the video.

It must have been very traumatic to witness this, but the man who recorded the above video is a hero - the one good thing about this is that there are a lot of witnesses. This video is damning evidence of the repeated awfulness by those girls.
