They definitely need to change that. They are stuck on the "exhaling with greater force while exercising" piece. |
This. PVS clubs in MD have run meets at the VA pools but we cannot run anything bigger than a small intramural meet here. And it’s pretty clear at this point that Elrich has something against swimming specifically. And btw, I see (well known MCPS school) boys lax captains practice daily at a local park. With basically no controls to limit transmission. |
Ok I’m glad I’m not the only one that thinks Elrich has an issue with swimming. Maybe because the council overrode him last summer on the lap swimming only plan he had? |
Please, for the love of God, stop repeating this. Surfaces don’t matter and the chlorine is in the water, not the air (where your nose and mouth are 90% of the time in a public pool). |
And yet transmissions in the swim context at indoor pools (super germy compared to outdoor pools) is pretty much zero (hockey, soccer, baseball, etc cannot say the same at all). Indoor pools actually have the advantage on environment. The warm humid environment is not ideal for the covid-19 virus And, yes, Chlorine does kill it. Heavy exhalation is done IN THE WATER with swim. Outdoor pools have the advantage of large volumes of fresh air - diluting the virus - and sunlight, also kills the virus. This area has done better than most because of our hot humid summers - transmission occurring in dry air/air conditioned environments. ALSO, touch contact surfaces has shows NOT to be a significant form of transmission. That was what was initially thought but this is spread via aerosols. |
| There is literally no transmission during outdoor soccer and baseball games, how ridiculous. |
| So is MCSL having a season or did MoCo cancel it? |
| PP-I believe MCSL is having a season but will make a decision by end of April on the format.- Virtual, Dual , etc. |
Prediction — virtual only meets. No spectators. One timer per lane with order of finish as backup. And the public pools will not be allowed to run a season. |
As much as I wish this prediction wasn’t accurate, I think you’re right. Has there been any discussion of whether there will still be A and B meets, even if they are virtual, or are they only going to be doing A meets? |
There would be very little reason to do summer swim then. And club swimmers will probably opt out if they can have real meets elsewhere. Swimming against someone makes for improvements. |
Agree with you that there is little point in doing swim season with virtual meets. The whole point of summer swimming, IMO, is the team aspects. Cheering on your teammates, yelling at the 8U anchor legs at the end of the meet to make up the difference, pep rallies, etc.. Take away all that and replace it with time trials every week, what’s the point? Just cancel it again. |
I agree that my whole family would miss the fun you reference - relays, crazy outfits, pasta dinners - but if the whole thing goes away I worry that our pool’s swim team will die. While I would much prefer a regular season, a virtual season would provide for junior coaching opportunities, team records, new kids to fall in love with swim. I hope they don’t cancel it outright when the PVS season points to a way to do things safely. |
It's up to the individual pools to do B meets, but would fall under the same waiver (forthcoming) as whatever is decided for A meets. |
I agree. I imagine that half of the kids wouldn't participate. PVS has done a great job of holding meets. It can be done safely. it just takes planning. |
