This. Like Paula Deen said this morning, if there is anyone who never said something they regretted, or said something that would hurt someone else if they heard it, she'd like them to come forward and throw a boulder at her, because she'd like to meet that person. That applies to all you "better than thou's" on DCUM. |
That's what I'm trying to get at. This board has some very judgmental folks on it (can't go to that school because of ESOL or FARMS, I can't buy in THAT neighborhood). Those are underlying stereotypes which are just as hurtful to society than saying a slur. I'm just not into the hypersensitive PC crap. I teach my kids to respect everyone and don't use slurs out loud but have thought them PLENTY of times. Have you ever driven here??? |
PP here! Yes, you said it so much better! |
Says the person whose child has never been called a nigger |
| Exactly! |
| I've been called slurs, just not that because I'm not black. But the words don't define me. Teach your kids self respect and confidence and they will turn the other way. We don't teach these qualities enough to our children. Words are just that words. Only YOU can allow them to have an impact on YOU. |

So basically a bunch of you are upset because you want to be able to say anything u want without consequence.
Have I ever "sinned" , said or did anything wrong, you bet i have in the past and will again...but I do know this...I have to take the consequences like a man (or in my case a woman)...and if I realize that my actions and/or words were hurtful and spoke to an experience I ...have only read it about but never lived, is nothing I ever have to worry about...if I cut someone deeply and am truly repentant...than yes... I apologize AND deal with the consequences...even if it means I lose one of my MANY streams of income. The funny thing is so many of you would be singing a different tune if this had to do with the degradation of women. |
You are kidding right? The lack of understanding behind the history ..ugh I cannot even finish... Profound Ignorance. |
"The funny thing is so many of you would be singing a different tune if this had to do with the degradation of women." So true, specifically the degradation of white women. |
Paula Dean is gross. It's not just her one use of the word "nigger." It's her entire views on race. It's her making jokes about an employee being "black as a board." It's her thinking having a wedding with all black servers is cool and fun. It's her making a joke about "pants on the ground" at the end of her apology and thinking it's funny. It's about her saying that she doesn't use that kind of language because her sons and grandkids don't like it, but then adding hastily "And, of course, it's wrong" when she realizes what she is admitting. It's her playing the "people are out to get me" card during an interview. It's her calling her great-grandfather's slaves "family." (No, sweetie. They were slaves. They didn't get a choice in the matter.) It's her expressing pity for her great-father's suicide after emancipation, but not for the slaves that he held. She's not a nice person. Food Network is right to bounce her. |

Holy crap. I can't believe what I'm reading here. Oh wait, yes I can. Thank you for affirming all I knew about this area. Yikes. I thought it was supposed to be educated. Is this what you are teaching your children? Really? |
"There are some things that are too painful, too blood drenched, too abhorrent..." ' language, about words and emotion, about words and pain. Consider the role of words in the brutal attacks on black people during slavery, during Jim Crow, during the civil rights movement. Consider how words were part of the attacks on black people." |
I've certainly said stuff I've regretted but I'm not making money off of the people that I offended. It's disingenuous to expect that you can say sorry and still think that the offended population will support your brand and buy your products. |
Yea...only a word. That word just happens to be one of the most hateful and divisive words known to man with a lot of negative history behind it. A person who says it in a targeted fashion is intending to hurt, demean and humiliate....but it is just a word? |
