Not ignorance, reality! It's America and gotta love freedom of speech.

Do you actually know what the concept is? You cannot be throwin in jail for what you say, but you can damn sure be fired for it.

Yea...only a word. That word just happens to be one of the most hateful and divisive words known to man with a lot of negative history behind it. A person who says it in a targeted fashion is intending to hurt, demean and humiliate....but it is just a word?

Jews who survived the Holocaust might beg to differ.

Beg to differ about it being only a word or beg to differ that the word is 'intending to hurt"?

This. Like Paula Deen said this morning, if there is anyone who never said something they regretted, or said something that would hurt someone else if they heard it, she'd like them to come forward and throw a boulder at her, because she'd like to meet that person.

That applies to all you "better than thou's" on DCUM.

+1

Oh please! She cannot have it both ways! She is a public figure who has made a boatload of money because of her celebrity. The downside to that fame is that everything you have said and done will be scrutinized to the nth degree. It is part of the deal and it happens to all celebrities at some point.

She should work on giving a more sincere apology, lay low for a few months, resurface and talk about how much she has learned and "soul searched" in that time. America loves redemption stories. But she should NOT continue the "glass house" tactics of your common 5YO.

That's what I'm trying to get at. This board has some very judgmental folks on it (can't go to that school because of ESOL or FARMS, I can't buy in THAT neighborhood). Those are underlying stereotypes which are just as hurtful to society than saying a slur.

I'm just not into the hypersensitive PC crap. I teach my kids to respect everyone and don't use slurs out loud but have thought them PLENTY of times. Have you ever driven here???

That's the worst part about it. The people who rally and cry are the same people who hide away in their enclaves.

However, I do not condone her alleged language and behavior.

uhhh yea....but I am pretty sure that I did not say that N-word was the most hateful and divisive word. In fact, I said that it is "one of the most". That leaves room for other words.

And I would also be willing to wager that most self respecting Jews would not argue such a point.

I find it objectionable that anyone would not understand that those words speak to a mind-set and belief system steeped in a history of dehuminization, degradation, violence and oppression -- therefore... knowing someone uses them...AND could possibly be guilty of workplace discrimination...yea...like I said before...I can see how a company thinks that is not a good look for them.
What is so hard to comprehend here?

That it has nothing to do with the lawsuit. Paula Deen does not even go to or work at the restaurant. That it is mind police. She might have thought a negative thought therefore she took the action and so on and so on....

I find your utter confusion utterly facinating

I bet Matt lauer has said the n word in the last 30 years. It would be funny for her to ask him so we could all watch him lie out of fear.... Like a squirming nothing of a man.

Black woman here...

I do not condone the things she has said but, I do not think she deserves to lose all her business ventures.

???? Why would you even think slurs? Why? I grew up in DC and have driven in the DC area most of my life. I don't see the justification in that for even thinking slurs. Nobody's going to know, so you're in the clear - don't worry! Don't fool yourself that *thinking* slurs isn't having at the very least a slight negative effect on your behavior, because it is.

another black woman here -- i don't necessarily think it is a matter of deserving to lose all of her ventures...i think it is a matter of those with whom she has partnered to do decide they do not want to be associated with what she has done...if only tangentially...
and some have decided "NO"...we don't want to partner anymore...
like i said...we all have to live with the consequences of what we have done
hopefully she will grow and go on

It is not about what she deserves. These companies have brands that have been carefully cultivated and marketed. As long as Deen was good for their business, all was well. Someone at these companies has decided that keeping Deen will create negative PR for their brands thereby potentially costing them money. Once this blows over in a few months, some of these sponsors will quietly take her back. It happened with Tiger Woods. But it is just too hot right now to keep her aboard. It's about the money.

"freedom of speech" does not mean what you think it does. In other words, it does not mean freedom from consequences, and there are always limits on freedom of speech.

Nope. Not everyone has used a racial slur or stereotype. Stop trying to justify yourself and Paula.
