Paul Deen Use of the the "N" word

Anonymous
She reminds me of my mother, who truly believes black people are sub-human. But my mother would never say the N word. Too much "class" for that.

Yeah, I'm with you.

I'm sorry that the poster above isn't shocked -- I wish this behavior was SO uncommon that hearing about it was like seeing a unicorn in the wild. That said, I think this info is "news" to people like me -- white, middle-class mom who has never once used that word and is still stunned to hear it.

Oh... Black woman here!

OP here again (also a BW)
I understand your point PP...we all say and think some things (right and wrong) at home and in private....
HOWEVER, these are things that were said at businesses she owns...are alleged patterns of behaviour that colored her behaviour and patterns of behaviour in HER BUSINESS.
this came out of deposition taken as part of a lawsuit alleging sexual and racial discrimination...
NO one is suing her cause she said something to her neighbor or said out loud to herself when she was home alone....there is a big difference there..

13:28 here... I mean who really cares that she said nigger and she discriminates against people. I don't! I don't buy her products, don't watch her shows and I think she is a big fat phony. I've been called nigger and worse by a whole ton of people. I've also been discriminated against at school and at work. When people call me a nigger (or in today's lexicon an Obama supporter) my response has always been, "really! If you say so. I'm a married mother of two beautiful DS's, a homeowner, a partner in my firm and we have a summer home. If that's how niggers role. I'm cool!"

When my former employer discriminated against me. I documented, sued and won. I took a picture of me holding my check in front of my old building.

We give power to that word by the outrage that it causes. Paula Deen means nothing to me.

I am the OP and I don't understand your point.
YOu are saying that if she says Nigger that is her business..then u go on to say that you were discriminated against and won...
Welllll the whole thing is about a discrimination lawsuit...so I am missing what your point is...
What are you saying that is so different than what I was saying?
Please to explain ??

Nothing to explain really other than I don't care what Paula Deen says or does. My only point in writing all that was if you call me that name, I won't care. If you discriminate against me, I'll retaliate. No one else needs to be outraged by it. It's a media circus... and for what? Because it's Paula Deen; people are really SHOCKED and OUTRAGED by her behavior? Really? If the people were discriminated against, I hope they win. But listserv and blog posts about how outraged people are that PAULA DEEN said and did those things are stupid. People say that word everyday. People discriminate everyday. Don't care about the word and pinecone the people that discriminate against you.

You realize that the reason discrimination works is because people like you say it doesn't mean anything to me because it didn't happen to me personally or affect me directly. That's insane. A lot of people's previous giving-a-shit allowed you to sue your previous employer and win. Because other people cared about what happens to you and people before you and people after you. You are utterly bizarre. It's a media circus because people give a damn, and they should.

100% agree!

I'm white and would never use the N word, as I find it hateful and ignorant.

It's a shame, though, that rappers and other black people like to use it themselves.

NP here. Who really cares what some old fat woman from the South says. She's a cook, and not even a very good one at that.

Outrage at what she says suggests that she's significant--which she isn't. I actually thought it was more significant when she had to acknowledge that her cooking was unhealthy and contributed to her own health issues and that she had to change her diet. At least that was relevant to her claim to fame.

Since when is someone entitled to compensation for hearing the n word? It is used many time in pop songs. This sounds like a gold digger lawsuit to me. The waiters were "slaves" b/c they dressed in tuxes? OOOKKK.

Don't start this lame argument.

My family is from Georgia and older uncles and such still use those terms on occasion. I don't condone it, but for people who grew up in the rural South in that time period, it was totally, totally normal. So no, if the Deen family used that word, I would not be the least bit surprised. The real question is does this woman suing them deserve to be compensated for hearing the Hierses/Deens use the n-word on occasion.

Ah, wrong. Also from Georgia. Only certain kinds of white families (e.g., lower class, uneducated, ignorant, or just nasty pigs) would use that word commonly in the 1940s, 50s, etc... Educated people with class did not. Even then it was a dirty word used for shock and denigration because the speaker needed to feel better about his/her place in the world.

IMO, upper class white folks are even WORSE racists than lower class ones, because they are the ones who truly held the power to oppress black people. All those judges, police officers, politicians etc who are responsible for the horrible treatment under Jim Crow? I'm sure they considered themselves "educated people".
