Who cares! I bet everyone on here has used a racial slur or said a stereotype. It is what it is. Only words. Move on. America has other things to worry about.
This. Like Paula Deen said this morning, if there is anyone who never said something they regretted, or said something that would hurt someone else if they heard it, she'd like them to come forward and throw a boulder at her, because she'd like to meet that person. That applies to all you "better than thou's" on DCUM.
That's what I'm trying to get at. This board has some very judgmental folks on it (can't go to that school because of ESOL or FARMS, I can't buy in THAT neighborhood). Those are underlying stereotypes which are just as hurtful to society than saying a slur. I'm just not into the hypersensitive PC crap. I teach my kids to respect everyone and don't use slurs out loud but have thought them PLENTY of times. Have you ever driven here???
Paula Dean is gross. It's not just her one use of the word "nigger." It's her entire views on race. It's her making jokes about an employee being "black as a board." It's her thinking having a wedding with all black servers is cool and fun. It's her making a joke about "pants on the ground" at the end of her apology and thinking it's funny. It's about her saying that she doesn't use that kind of language because her sons and grandkids don't like it, but then adding hastily "And, of course, it's wrong" when she realizes what she is admitting. It's her playing the "people are out to get me" card during an interview. It's her calling her great-grandfather's slaves "family." (No, sweetie. They were slaves. They didn't get a choice in the matter.) It's her expressing pity for her great-father's suicide after emancipation, but not for the slaves that he held. She's not a nice person. Food Network is right to bounce her.
