Paul Deen Use of the the "N" word

My family is from Georgia and older uncles and such still use those terms on occasion. I don't condone it, but for people who grew up in the rural South in that time period, it was totally, totally normal. So no, if the Deen family used that word, I would not be the least bit surprised. The real question is does this woman suing them deserve to be compensated for hearing the Hierses/Deens use the n-word on occasion.

And why is she bringing this up now? $$$$

The discrimination is ALLEGED...
The usage of the word ..that is fact...this came from a COURT DEPOSITION....
Her team has already tried to spin and apologize

Please go back and read what was said.

What exactly am I supposed to be reading?

1) OP: I am in no way surprised by her use of the word or the thinking that goes behind it

2) The reason the woman is bringing it up is if this kind of thinking and behaviour (use of the word, and other racial epithets) was done in the workplace -- It creates a hostile environment and is ILLEGAL...

3) This is true if it was a gay man suing because Paula and Bubba were constantly using the word "fag", making gay jokes, trying to hire stereotypically effeminantely dressed gay men dressed in drag to be the waitstaff at a wedding because she wanted a 'drag queen' theme...or she wanted folks dressed up as holocause victims....

4) tho the use of the word may not have always been in the workplace -- it shows state of mind, proclivity to use the word, past behavior that falls in line with the behaviour that is alleged to have taken place at work....

5) It is not ok to degrade people, put them down, call them out of their name, mistreat them based on race, gender, sexual orientation...u cannot do this at work ...it is wrong...point, period, end of story

I will never understand Southern Culture or Southerners. Their love of the Confederate Flag, I just don't get why they hang on to the racism? I am from out West and loathe anything related to the Civil War because it brings out the absolute worst aspects of Southerners.

Anyone who says racism is dead is an idiot!

Racism is by no means confined to the south

Oh... Black woman here!

OP here again (also a BW)
I understand your point PP...we all say and think some things (right and wrong) at home and in private....
HOWEVER, these are things that were said at businesses she owns...are alleged patterns of behaviour that colored her behaviour and patterns of behaviour in HER BUSINESS.
this came out of deposition taken as part of a lawsuit alleging sexual and racial discrimination...
NO one is suing her cause she said something to her neighbor or said out loud to herself when she was home alone....there is a big difference there..

13:28 here... I mean who really cares that she said nigger and she discriminates against people. I don't! I don't buy her products, don't watch her shows and I think she is a big fat phony. I've been called nigger and worse by a whole ton of people. I've also been discriminated against at school and at work. When people call me a nigger (or in today's lexicon an Obama supporter) my response has always been, "really! If you say so. I'm a married mother of two beautiful DS's, a homeowner, a partner in my firm and we have a summer home. If that's how niggers role. I'm cool!"

When my former employer discriminated against me. I documented, sued and won. I took a picture of me holding my check in front of my old building.

We give power to that word by the outrage that it causes. Paula Deen means nothing to me.

Black woman here. From the accounting of the transcripts, it looks like she's saying she said "nigger" a long time ago and doesn't use it now (and doesn't condone using it). I have no way to tell if that is true, but I can see how this is possible. She grew up during a time when blacks were heavily oppressed and no one thought twice about calling a black person "nigger". When you add in she's from the south...

I also don't get the hoopla over the "slavery-themed" wedding. It seems like she was mimicking a restaurant's southern theme without realizing that the nostalgia looks bad from the viewpoint of blacks. How many hear long for the "good old days" without fully thinking about what those "good old days" mean to blacks. Actually, I think I'm more upset with the jive-ass black folks who were the waitstaff at the restaurant/wedding.

So, yeah, not really outraged by this. It's also interesting when white folks get upset over stuff that's not racist to blacks while they shrug their shoulders in confusion when a black person tells them about a racist occurrence. Similar to the straight folks yelling about gay rights. Not saying we don't appreciate the support, but yeah...tone it down a bit.

Welllll the whole thing is about a discrimination lawsuit...so I am missing what your point is...

As the OP I am neither outraged or surprised..not surprised at all

Nothing to explain really other than I don't care what Paula Deen says or does. My only point in writing all that was if you call me that name, I won't care. If you discriminate against me, I'll retaliate. No one else needs to be outraged by it. It's a media circus... and for what? Because it's Paula Deen; people are really SHOCKED and OUTRAGED by her behavior? Really? If the people were discriminated against, I hope they win. But listserv and blog posts about how outraged people are that PAULA DEEN said and did those things are stupid. People say that word everyday. People discriminate everyday. Don't care about the word and pinecone the people that discriminate against you.

White mom here. Well, I'm shocked she would have such poor judgment. We NEVER use the "N" word - ever - nor have our kids. Nor our parents. Period. It's hate language.
