Would you really leave America if Trump/Musk are scaring you?

You do know that most privileged Americans are scared of this administration and horrified by Trump. That’s why we are thinking of fleeing our own country. The tone deafness it would take to come on to this thread and say Americans don’t care…. Just wow.

The PP is right. Most Americans don’t care. And maybe privileged Americans like you should use your privilege to do something instead of running away.

NP. If I was a billionaire I’d use my $$ to run anti-trump and Elon ads. I’m privileged, but can’t afford that and compete with the oligarchs, so I’ll run away.

So because you're not a billionaire, you're going to run away and leave the least privileged Americans to suffer?

But, if you wear a tinfoil hat and assume there will be no further elections in the U.S. ever, you'll be patting yourself on the back.

Which scenario seems the more likely?

I think we will still have elections, they just won’t be free and fair. No doubt there are parallels to other authoritarians and America is going to be significantly changed by this administration. I think people just don’t know how extreme it will get.

We are probably heading towards being like Russia. They still have elections but Putin certainly isn’t going anywhere.

There will be sham elections, that’s all. We’re past the point of no return. A military coup would be the only hope, but they probably already have that base covered.

What do you expect the PP to do?

How can any individual fight the massive number of idiots who believe the relentless flow of misinformation?

Not to mention that the people who do have some power are doing nothing, e.g. Congress people. They are obviously hamstrung by something. What can average people going to do if the reps can’t do anything.

We are immigrants and can afford to leave. We have enough money to live on in our country of origin, and homes/properties that we can put to use. And my mom, who will be more than happy to have us, at least temporarily. DH and I are planning on wrapping up our business and move some funds out. DD is unhappy, but we have explained the situation to her and she understands. My brother is seriously looking into moving to Costa Rica.

We will miss our country, but it isn't worthwhile putting DD at risk.

I don't know, maybe not just bail?
What makes you think other countries want to take in selfish cowards?

I know, you'll say it's not your fault and you'll be welcome anywhere because you have money, and you don't care even if you're not welcome because your family blah blah....and that is precisely why Americans are so despised around in the world and why the country was so susceptible to this in the first place.

We do not have the means to support ourselves in another country, sadly, so we are stuck here. If things really got bad I probably would just shoot myself. We do not have children (and likely won’t because of this current admin) so no real loss to anyone. I hate it here so much.

Fear of Jail time or investigation. If any of our politicians come out and call this a coup or authoritarianism, organize a serious protest, the DOJ and the FBI are going to be deep down their throats.

My husband is Canadian and we are up here for what was supposed to be a short stint, but we have instead decided to sell our FL vacation home and postpone the move indefinitely.

At our heart we are a country of people who bailed from our homelands when they stopped working out for us. Some have gotten fat and lazy and became what their ancestors would have abhorred, others did great and have no reason to leave, but others still have retained that self preservation instinct to bail when stuff looks bad but before it’s too late.

May it serve them well, I wish them the best. Unfortunately I’ll be going down, hopefully swinging.

The purge of disloyal generals is beginning. I fear we are beyond the point that even a coup would happen.

I can’t stay here and watch it all burn.

Your daughter having a disability will make it impossible for her to move to another country. Wake up.

Eff off. Why would you say this, instead of something helpful? What's wrong with you?

Because it’s true. Look at any immigration forum. Migration to any European country, even with socialized healthcare will require the new immigrant not be a burden on the state. If your kid needs substantial Medicaid it will be near impossible to get any migration visa. Get real.

Not saying you're substantively wrong, just that you were pretty heartless in the delivery. We're all scared and considering options right now.

Universities accept lot of international students. More than 100,000 Americans already live in Australia. On the negative side, high COL and tough housing market.

My European family live in the U.S. and Australia. Not sure how you think Australia is open to immigrants. The illegals are shipped off to an island with well-documented abuse and the legal are not treated very well. We are white so fared much better but Australia is well-known for being racist.

Thank you, PP. I spent three months in Australia and found it one of the most racist places in the world. I’ve visited 97 countries so that is my comparison. The way they ship immigrants to Nauru is awful. They even had a deal to send some immigrants to the US. Look it up. While you’re researching, look at the appalling treatment towards the indigenous there. It’s a stark difference from how the Māori are treated in New Zealand. NZ is a far nicer country.
