Are people canceling summer vacations or not really that concerned yet?

Outside of all the politics, there’s a lot to see and do in Moscow and the surrounding area. Russian food is pretty good too.

I hope someday to be able to go to Russia. The literature, the ballet, the music—Russian culture has contributed so much to the world, and I would like to see its birthplace. But I don’t know that the circumstances will be right in my lifetime.

It’s as if you put enough sh*t under pressure, a few diamonds might emerge. While they shine bright, never forget the time and stench that proceeded them.

Oh please. Like the US is any better.

Go live a day in the life. You are a ridiculous idiot.

You really think Russian cultural contributions are less than the US? You are a philistine.

As much as it comes as a shock to those on the Jobs board, a lot of us are not feds and not worried about job loss.

Oy vey. We aren’t feds but we know that gutting the government will impact the private sector. But even if we don’t lose our jobs, the economy might crash. And economy impact aside, there are other impacts; FAA layoffs, frayed relationships with other countries/growing anger against Americans, gutting the NPS, etc. So yeah, it’s not just about keeping your jobs.

Maybe we can rebook flights and hotels for a discount! The trips we took in 2021 were dirt cheap.

I have a spring break trip booked to Copenhagen that I booked almost a year ago. I am not worried about how people will treat us abroad. I've spoken with my European friends (I am visiting with one) and they have reassured me that Europeans know that the majority of Americans did not vote for Trump and are resisting. They feel obviously very upset about the whole situation but feel very sad for the americans who did not vote for him and are trying their best to resist and will not be rude or nasty. It's more of this vibe of "we still love you guys and you can escape here if you need to, stay strong".

I am scared about the flying aspect but the airline I'm flying with hasnt' had any issues and the overall risk is still very low. I may take some antianxiety meds before I fly though and I will be very strict with the seatbelts on my children. I will bring the extra harness thing that goes over the seat belt for smaller children for my younger child for extra safety even though he's just about hit 40 lbs.

Russia has a lot to offer, yes. So does Ukraine; Lviv is one of my favorite cities. But I wouldn't suggest going anywhere near there for...years? a decade? longer?

Of course not! Better make sure all the businesses you spend your money on during your trip vote blue too otherwise what’s the point?

You have a lot of work to do before this vacation!!!

Yup. May do a road trip in summer, but no other trips.

I predict in my generic UMC neighborhood in Loudoun, lavish vacations and renovations will go on as planned. Money seems to grow on trees out here. It’s unbelievable.

Loudon is full of feds/fed contractors. You need to get out of your bubble, because by summer that area is going to be suffering from massive job cuts and their vacations will be staycations as the parents look for new jobs.

Maybe. Didn’t happen in 2008/2009 or during the pandemic. Just $$$$$$ everywhere. I feel like such an outsider here. Can’t afford to move closer in, and DH’s job is in this area or yes I would leave.

DC and areas like Loudoun were 100% insulated from 2008-2009 - it was a finance crash, govt/govt contractors were unscathed. Covid - these are people who work in white collar jobs in offices, not in restaurants so they pivoted to WFH and Zoom within one week and were good to go - so again money was flowing. This time it's unfortunately the DC area's turn.

I think anyone who thinks fed cuts and the impetus behind what Trump is doing won’t potentially have an effect on them too is delusional. That does not mean I think everyone is at imminent risk of job loss but if you think this starts and stops at a few hundred thousand feds, you’re being blindly confident. I think it’s very plausible the man tanks the economy to the degree a lot of people who felt themselves impervious will be stunned to realize they weren’t.

I agree it will do some damage to the economy as a whole but it’s very unlikely to impact our jobs. Yes it could harm our investment accounts but those are long term - we can ride out a recession without making withdrawals. We also keep 2 years of cash in no-penalty CDs.

Thanks for the narcissistic response

Not everything is narcissistic. Some things can just be ordinary selfish/self centered. Not all those people are narcissists.

Narcissist might be one of the most overused words of the decade.

If you all are sad about canceling European trips- try South America. We are so happy with every trip we make there. They love children, the food is incredible and it’s winter there during our summers. It’s beautiful. Maybe 1/3 the price of European cities. we get sick of European hotels that can’t accommodate families (one queen bed, hard to find adjoining rooms).

But definitely don't go to Argentina - where they ruthlessly cut government agencies.
