Lets? If he stopped her by force, he’d be abusive. If he stopped her with words, he’d be manipulative and controlling. “And he was known to be controlling—he wouldn’t ‘let’ her exercise! Look at all the warning signs, and she still didn’t leave him…”

Marriages are full of compromising. Running in Memphis at 4am is not sane or rational. If she forced the issue, he could run with her, follow in an SUV, get her a pistol, get her a trained German Shepard to run with. They could afford a body guard to follow in an SUV. All sorts of ways for an actually loving and caring husband to avoid this tragedy.

You think someone who works FT for 50k will spend a good chunk of that on a bodyguard.

They lived in a $600k+ house and drove at least one $100k new SUV. They had access to far more money than her $50k teaching income and whatever the sketchy husband made at some ATV dealership. But I wouldn’t expect her to handle something involving the university. I would expect a caring husband to ask the in-laws to handle it.

LOL is a 600k house supposed to be expensive? My home is 3.5 million and I an no heiress.

DCUM hates tattoos. Not “classy.”

It's not just the tattoos and it's not like he has just one inconspicuous tattoo. He has very sketchy sleeve tattoos, tattoos on his knee and calve, on his chest, even on his hands. And he's an admitted substance abuser. And he looks disheveled.

DP. I don’t have any tattoos. Not into them at all. But I rarely see people under the age of 35 who don’t have them these days. Like all over their bodies. In no way is this an indication of propensity for crime.

B.S. Note she has none or at least none visible. I assure you there were plenty of eligible bachelor's at whatever country club she grew up in, private school, Baylor, Belmont, and in her church and marathon orbits who also didn't have their bodies covered in sketchy tattoos.

You all are nuts today. Maybe her husband did it, maybe he didn’t. His tattoos have nothing to do with it - how about skin color, would be having this conversation about him if he was black? Judging him for that?

You're right, they don't suggest he's low class. And letting his solo pretty young wife and mother to two young children jog around a dangerous drug-infested hellhole at 4am also does not suggest he's low class. Whatever you say.

Affidavit is out for the arrest of Cleotha Abston.

For the life of me, I can’t figure out how to post a tweet, but here is the link:

Context is important. Memphis is a flyover dump, it's not Bethesda.

Public record shows they paid $600k for a charming 3k sq/ft cape cod style home a couple years ago. Pretty big money for Memphis. And not a home you can afford on just a pre-k teacher’s salary. Near the university and a couple golf courses, which seems like the concentrated pocket of wealth for the otherwise downtrodden city.

It’s really not. A simple Zillow search will show you hundreds of houses that sold for more (in many cases, much more) than $600k in the area immediately surrounding the University of Memphis in the past couple of years.

Median home in Memphis is $200k, per capita income in $26k. It's a downtrodden lawless town. Their house now zillows for $750k. Please find me pre-k teachers (<$50k salary) and "boat salesman" ( ) who have $750k homes and brand new $100k Jeep SUVs without access to a trust fund.

I’m just saying, for a true billionaire heiress, with the kind of money that could convince the local university to open their gym early just for you ( ), as some posters insist, she could have had her pick of much, much nicer houses. Plenty of people are spending $1M+ in this apparently downtrodden town.

But she didn't want to. She's not you. Her values are different, clearly.

I don’t know anything about her values, nor do you know mine. I’m just saying this particular area of Memphis is not the lawless hell hole many are portraying it to be.

There are shootings, robberies and ODs throughout this area all year. From their back porch they can probably hear cars racing and at times random gunfire. Memphis is an OD and homicide capital of the US. Students are routinely robbed on campus. That in fact makes it a lawless hell hole. And she's a distant runner, so don't pretend as if she was running to the end of her nice neighborhood and back. There isn't some 10 sq/mi Memphis bubble that is safe to run alone at 4am.

Full disclosure: I am a fellow early morning runner, living in a nice enclave of a southern city with a crime problem, so I guess I kind of get it. Runners gotta run. I don’t do it alone, though. She should have had a running buddy.

Does this story make you think twice about continuing to do so? (Not being snarky, I’m actually curious)

It's not victim blaming. Look up the definition.

It's weird she worked, that is all. Nobody said she couldn't work.

What era are you living in? I come from a high net worth family and my in laws are billionaires. Everyone works and has a string work ethic. We do also volunteer and are generous in philanthropy but were raised to know nothing is a given or expected and of course we work. I would not want my children to grow up in a house without learning these values. Like this woman I tailor my hours so I am home when the children are home and appreciate that most people do not have this opportunity. To say she shouldn’t work? Other than victim blaming, it also sounds like a 1950s mentality. Finally, to those who say she looked much older, all of my runner friends have that look due to low body fat and excess sun exposure.

It's not about 1950's. It's about being a billionaire heiress. I am not that rich and choose to work part time for life balance.

$600K buys more of a house in Memphis than $3.5M in a desirable area within the Beltway.

Tbf it’s all her money, she probably calls the shots & he is deferential

Do you ever ask why fathers work (if they don't have to???)

Many people want to spend their most productive years doing more than making meals, cleaning a house and doing child care. (Or for a richer person, supervising staff, choosing fabric and resort getaways).

I admire her for trying to contribute to society and form an identity that is not attached to her successful ancestors.

If she was male, you would probably describe her very differently.

(And this scenario is quite common. I have known teachers and social workers who absolutely did not have to work.)

I would wonder why a male would choose to work also.
Unless the man or woman works for the family business. That would make more sense.

Not really. Bad stuff can happen anywhere, at any time of day. Maybe I would worry more if I was still young and pretty, which I know is an f’d up way to think.

Sounds like the police expect she is dead. This is so terrible.

Weird to work at a preschool and have a nanny for your own kids. Like why avoid spending time with your own kids.
Anonymous
An arrest has been made, but curious if the kidnapper even knew who she was.
Anonymous
Can we stop talking about the husband now that they've arrested the guy who did it?

Affidavit indicates they have his cell / location data placing him at the site of the abduction. One might guess they also have generated a map from that data of everywhere went (McDonald's?) unless he was smart enough to ditch the phone, which is doubtful.
