More women will die because they are not careful and take common sense precautions. They stupidly think that the onus of their safety lies on men behaving properly and criminals following law. They are idiots.

Many years ago, my DD was in middle school and the PE requirement was that she changed into her PE uniform or her grades would be docked. The girls locker rooms were in a open area with no doors. I gave her a mens XXXL t-shirt to put over her head and change underneath the t-shirt as a tent. Other parents found this insistence on modest a bit weird (as we are immigrants), and then we found out that the janitor was recording the girls on his phone. Yes, another pedo pervert at MCPS. Parents were distraught. Why? What did you expect? There were young preteen girls shedding their clothes and an opportunity and you trust ALL the male teachers, male students and other staff to be good humans?

Men who are rapists, perverts and criminals are found all over the world, so are we expecting USA to be a land of the well behaved? No. We will have the same numbers of criminals here and perhaps more because no one gets hanged for raping in this country. The laws are not strict enough to make people with criminal tendencies behave in this country.

You are choosing to label rape victims "idiots." And basically saying "men will be men."

You also think harsh penalties, rather than good parenting and a mental health system, prevent sexual violence in adults. You have some extremely backward views from how you were raised. You should try your best to read up on the science of mental illness.

AND, you should not be so smug as to think that you and your daughters are safe because you are not idiots. KARMA is a b*t#h.

I hope the perp’s mother is brought up in charges of neglect and jailed right along with her son! It absolutely was his mother’s fault for raising such a bad son.

Anyone to blame as long as it's not Cleotha.

Does anyone know if she took this same running route every day? Has it been confirmed that his SUV was the one reported by the Memphis girls Cross Country team? Since surveillance showed his SUV had waiting there for a while around 3:30 / 4:00 a.m., it seems like he was waiting for someone to go by.

Of course he's the one to blame. The question is what factors created his violent criminal behavior and what could have / should have been done.

Of course they should have that right, but unfortunately in the world we live in, sh!t’s going to happen. There are horrible people who rape and murder. That is NEVER going to change, no matter what we do. So plan accordingly.

Did you forget about Wendy Martinez?

What about her? Are you saying just because people are assaulted (and killed, in this case) earlier in the day, and in public, that no one should take precautions then because it can happen to anyone?

No, but you should stop with the victim blaming, this can happen to anyone.

Of course it can. But realistic people can take precautions to keep themselves safer. It’s never a guarantee. Do you really not understand that?

Stay in your basement on your treadmill. Wear a burqa. Only go out during permitted hours for women and always have a male relative escort. It's just precautions.

Yes. Because those are the only possible precautions one can take to keep themselves safe.
I remember one time, years ago, I decided to take an early morning run on the trail in Bethesda. 20 minutes in and I was like “bad idea, bad idea!” I kept checking over my shoulder and was hyper aware of my surroundings. I just turned around and went home. Not worth it.

So then what happened? You just never went out for a run again?

Not by myself on a desolate trail. I started running either with a partner (on that trail) or at a different time and place.

When can we just admit that this sh!t has been happening since the dawn of time, and it’s going to continue to happen. There’s nothing that could have been done. Evil people exist. It is what it is.

This is (at least) the second time someone has said this. WOMEN. WOMENS cross country team. Not girls.

Typically high school teams are referred to as girls and boys.

Somene stated upthread the man Cleotha had kidnapped (many years ago) actually worked in the same law firm as Eliza's uncle. That kidnapping led to Cleotha getting a long prison sentence, right? And he recently got out of jail, right?

Wonder if this was a revenge killing for all the years he spend in jail.

So, are there actually any updates in this case?

This is collegiate level (Univ of Memphis), so PP is correct, it should be women's cross country.

University of Memphis not a high school.

Very doubtful. Memphis is a small city and my guess is almost everyone in the “nice” part of town (central gardens) had some connection to each other.

Good article about the reasons for a the high criminal rate in Memphis. Nothing to blame the victim for.

Thanks for sharing this article. Although this was specifically about Memphis, it is interesting to note that homicides were not largely due to gangs etc and that most homicides were committed against people known to each other, so not stranger murders.
