Public record shows they paid $600k for a charming 3k sq/ft cape cod style home a couple years ago. Pretty big money for Memphis. And not a home you can afford on just a pre-k teacher’s salary. Near the university and a couple golf courses, which seems like the concentrated pocket of wealth for the otherwise downtrodden city.

It’s really not. A simple Zillow search will show you hundreds of houses that sold for more (in many cases, much more) than $600k in the area immediately surrounding the University of Memphis in the past couple of years.

Median home in Memphis is $200k, per capita income in $26k. It's a downtrodden lawless town. Their house now zillows for $750k. Please find me pre-k teachers (<$50k salary) and "boat salesman" ( ) who have $750k homes and brand new $100k Jeep SUVs without access to a trust fund.

I’m just saying, for a true billionaire heiress, with the kind of money that could convince the local university to open their gym early just for you ( ), as some posters insist, she could have had her pick of much, much nicer houses. Plenty of people are spending $1M+ in this apparently downtrodden town.

But she didn't want to. She's not you. Her values are different, clearly.

I don’t know anything about her values, nor do you know mine. I’m just saying this particular area of Memphis is not the lawless hell hole many are portraying it to be.

Not a lawless hellhole but not a safe city for 4:30 a.m. jogs alone.

Is it okay for your husband to go have beers for an hour after work and drive home? Is it okay for him to skydive every weekend? Or maybe take up bullriding? Of course not. You'd push back on all of that because you're his wife, he's the father of your children. Just as this "man" should have pushed back on her nutty 4am running routine. At the very least, he's clearly no southern gentleman, that's for sure.

What a fool.

Of course he should have supported her in her effort to prepare for running marathons and wear whatever she wanted to wear and then had some heart-to-heart discussions with her on what would be most reasonable for their family. Folks are inarticulately in saying that what a husband worth his salt should have done was not "allow" or "let" her run alone during those early morning hours was that he should have helped her figure out how to accommodate her desire to have long runs within their family's schedule and in a safe and prudent way. If that meant discussing hiring a baby sitter for when she got off of work or hiring a cook to prepare dinner, or hiring a baby sitter for the evening hours so that he could drive along her running route, then that is what one does to keep a loved one safe.

DCUM hates tattoos. Not “classy.”

It's not just the tattoos and it's not like he has just one inconspicuous tattoo. He has very sketchy sleeve tattoos, tattoos on his knee and calve, on his chest, even on his hands. And he's an admitted substance abuser. And he looks disheveled.

DP. I don’t have any tattoos. Not into them at all. But I rarely see people under the age of 35 who don’t have them these days. Like all over their bodies. In no way is this an indication of propensity for crime.

Nope. It's the husband.

Apparently he has multiple DUI arrests and is actively “in recovery.” Plus bad tattoos. It’s sorta weird that a WASP like her would be mixed up with him. I’d love to know their backstory.

That said, her social media is fully open to the public. If someone wanted to kidnap a billionaire heiress, she’s a pretty good target given her social media use, public stature within the community, etc. Not hard to put together who she is and ascertain the means of her family.

They met in church I think. She was a private school teacher and he was a coast guard mechanic who was working at a boat place. So clearly their lifestyle was being funded by her inheritance.

How does a billionaire’s family allow her to marry and have children with such a deadbeat? My gosh.

Sounds like they met in recovery. But it sounds like his addiction issues were much more severe.

Oh no, this sounds like my brother...who met his first wife in a mental hospital. What could possibly go wrong.

Yeah, much better to marry one of the people who never are honest and vulnerable and willing to seek help for their depression, anxiety or other mental health disorders.

I don't understand why anyone at all is mentioning the time of the morning. You think women aren't attacked or assaulted in broad daylight?!

There are shootings, robberies and ODs throughout this area all year. From their back porch they can probably hear cars racing and at times random gunfire. Memphis is an OD and homicide capital of the US. Students are routinely robbed on campus. That in fact makes it a lawless hell hole. And she's a distant runner, so don't pretend as if she was running to the end of her nice neighborhood and back. There isn't some 10 sq/mi Memphis bubble that is safe to run alone at 4am.

Most of my employees (female) have extensive tattoos. It is the norm nowadays. Tattoo ink does not make someone a murderer.

B.S. Note she has none or at least none visible. I assure you there were plenty of eligible bachelor's at whatever country club she grew up in, private school, Baylor, Belmont, and in her church and marathon orbits who also didn't have their bodies covered in sketchy tattoos.

Memphis really is akin to Baltimore in terms of inequality, rich culture, poverty, crime, senseless violence, etc.

Whatever you would do/wouldn’t do in Baltimore, the same rules apply. That should put it into context for the DCUM crowd.

Full disclosure: I am a fellow early morning runner, living in a nice enclave of a southern city with a crime problem, so I guess I kind of get it. Runners gotta run. I don’t do it alone, though. She should have had a running buddy.

See also U of Chicago, where the university literally gives students monthly Uber (?) credits to travel across campus after dark. But the phonies in this thread will pretend they'd be fine with their college-aged daughter jogging at 4am around the south side of Chicago. Riiiiiight.

You all are nuts today. Maybe her husband did it, maybe he didn’t. His tattoos have nothing to do with it - how about skin color, would be having this conversation about him if he was black? Judging him for that?

What scientific journal did you get that out of? Judge much?
