When are Herndon Middle and Herndon High going to get a break?!??

Sounds like the former are like most of us who are sometimes on the receiving end of decisions that require some adjustment, and the latter are the privileged folks who think they should always be allowed to call the shots.

Ok then, Langley, take McLean's Timberland neighborhood. How's that?

I took this from another poster on another thread:

Based on Virginia DOE data comparing fall 2018 to fall 2013: the change in percentage is followed by the FARMS percentages for 2018-19 school year:

Falls Church -4.30% (50.05%)
Fairfax -3.87% (22.11%)
Hayfield -1.24% (28.61%)
Marshall -0.83% (17.39%)
McLean -0.45% (8.31%)
TJ -0.37% (1.86%)
Lake Braddock -0.23% (15.22%)
Langley -0.13% (1.77%)
Robinson +0.03% (10.72%)
Chantilly +0.31% (16.34%)
Edison +0.35% (35.59%)
South County +0.57% (18.43%)
West Springfield +0.83% (12.72%)
West Potomac +1.04% (40.89%)
Mount Vernon +1.35% (57.98%)
South Lakes +1.77% (27.76%)
Madison +1.82% (9.98%)
Lee +1.89% (51.46%)
Oakton +2.38% (12.40%)
Centreville +2.93% (26.39%)
Woodson +3.11% (11.94%)
Westfield +3.39% (25.42%)
Justice +5.99% (61.00%)
Herndon +7.99% (40.53%)
Annandale +9.34% (59.72%)

Why is it fair that Langley is at 1.77% FARM and Herndon is at 40.53% (and rising) FARM???

Ditto! Wish the people are this message board had the capacity to understand that concept but they don’t!

Well then, what's stopping you from sending your kids there?

NP. I can't answer that question but I'll point out that Herndon is about to get doubly-screwed (and so is West Potomac, Falls Church, and Lee) because FCPS is planning to raise the threshold to qualify for Title I yet again. Those schools won't qualify under the new mandate.

Why do you care? Both schools educate their students. Do you resent kids getting fed at Herndon?

For FY 2018 and FY2019 the FCPS program budget showed no title 1 middle schools or high schools. FCPS title 1 page shows 1 middle school. Will that be Glasgow? FCPS has programs which direct extra funding to school sites based on need or school board political program placement.

One program based on need is AVID and that has not been at Herndon High School despite the dramatic change in demographics over the last 15 years.
https://www.fcps.edu/sites/default/files/media/pdf/FY_2020_Proposed_Budget_Final.pdf p 38:

"Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) 0.0 positions AVID is currently implemented in two secondary schools,11 high schools, and 10 middle schools. To support the College Success program and to close student achievement gaps, funding of $87,000 is required to expand the AVID program to add three schools in FCPS in FY 2020, with expansion to the remaining 10 school sites in the next two years. The proposed schools for FY 2020 are Herndon High School, Key Middle School, and a Title I elementary school that has not yet been identified. The current three-year expansion plan includes a total of eight additional secondary sites and the introduction of AVID to five Title I elementary schools. "

No AVID - but it is at many other schools. 1.8 m budget that trains tutors and a whopping 25% of it's budget goes to gatehouse non-school based. Tutors? IDK but how is it justified that FCPS and the school board didn't have Herndon HS or Herndon MS on that list? There's a lot of money spent with local property tax dollars that is going to schools other than Herndon MS/HS plus specific elementary schools which have had high impact in-boundary disadvantaged English Language Learner students. FCPS has not changed allocations nor justified the extra costs per pupil on specific programs.

Dranesville District school member is only 1 out of 12 votes . These funds are why the November 2019 three at large school board member election is very important.

I am not familiar with this program. However, the bolded shows what is wrong with FCPS. Here's a novel idea:
1. Cut Gatehouse
2. Give teachers smaller classes.
3. Cut out all the "training" that takes teachers away from classrooms and planning time.
4. Give the teacher more leeway to do what works for the students and not what is directed from above.

Give schools with high FARMS additional funds to hire instructional aides and tutors.

+1. To the PP who asked, I believe Poe is the middle school in question. It’s ~75% FRM.

The poor schools get 95% of FCPS’s attention and most of the resources. All Langley wants is to be left alone.

Wow nice way to go low. The pp was telling it like it is. Might not be popular but it is still true. Parents at Langley invest in the school. Folks at other schools should try it. Maybe they would be happier.

Why should he/she be ashamed? They are not demanding anything more from FCPS. It would be interesting to see how the funds they get from FCPS compares to other schools. I bet it is a lot less.

Of course the schools gets attention from the teachers, parents and students. But the FCPS administration and School Board leave Langley on auto pilot. All their focus is on poor schools, Title I schools and IB schools. And then they whine when Langley just asks not to be part of their social engineering fantasies.
