On a more serious note, it's hard to tell if half of these comments are from trolls or actual parents, considering I know a few who have made these types of elitist comments in private.

Sorry, I'm from "the world," and out there had never even heard from U Michigan, and I doubt a single relative or colleague or friend has.

Then your "world" is a very small one. U Michigan is a top school for many programs and those who admit they don't know about it simply show their own ignorance.

Tell me, wise and wordly lady, what is the #15 top university in Germany?

Or in Japan?

Or in China?

Or in Brazil?

And I'm being generous...

Waiting for answers from the wise and wordly PP....

And waiting and waiting...

You're seriously this much of a loser that you post repeatedly for an answer? Newsflash...I'm not a loser who comes on DCUM every day. I have a full time job, a family and a life off of the computer. I posted my statement and haven't been back on DCUM since then. To answer your ridiculous post...

First, it's irrelevant about what the #15 school is in any of these countries because the link that was posted to you was based on WORLD rankings, not country rankings. Also, I have to assume that you live in DC or at least in the US and are posting on a university forum. Therefore, it is not unfathomable to think that you would have familiarized yourself with the universities of the country in which you reside. If I were living elsewhere then I would have done exactly that. In addition, I would not have been so arrogant as to fight those who point out that I didn't know something. I usually use those times as an opportunity to learn something new.

But, to get back to your inquiry...The top universities in the countries you asked about (not going to do the #15 since your assumptions about the link are lacking in comprehension)
Germany: LMU Munich
Japan: The University of Tokyo
China: Tsinghua University,
Brazil: Universidad Federal de Sao Paulo.

Other top universities in the world...

Italy: Bocconi
Netherlands: Leiden
England: Oxford/Cambridge (obviously), but also Imperial College, University College London
Scotland: Edinburgh
France: Paris Science et Lettres. Also Sciences Po which has a dual program with Columbia University

And yes, I know current and former students at most of the above universities, including family members.

Now, it's going to be a beautiful day. I would suggest you do what most normal people do and head outside. I think you need some fresh air and a long walk. Maybe then you can work on the obsessive behavior. Good day.

Blah blah blah blah -- you must be an American academic, probably somehow affiliated with U Michigan.

Which I am sure is a lovely place, but to claim that it is "one of the most well-regarded universities in the world" ... yes, go get some fresh air, ideally outside your minuscule bubble.

I know it's a great school only from all the time I've spent poking around this board, but previous to that I knew nothing about. I'm guessing the "average" person has only heard of it in regards to sports. It's not like Harvard, Yale, Princeton, or Stanford that everyone is familiar with and impressed by. Most people don't have a deep familiarity with the reputations of most colleges outside of the Ivy's (or Ivy calibers) and the schools that are highly regarded in their region. I'm sure every average Joe in the midwest realizes that Michigan is a selective school, but the average Joe on the coasts doesn't

Just realized what the Michigan academic was likely thinking.

It was "U Michigan is one of the most well-regarded universities in the world of Michigan academics."

True.

Denizens of DC might not have heard of it, but that's because DC is a deeply provincial place.

Another funny provincial fool.

PP, please show us any ranking published outside the US and not in English.

Those Times ranking and the QS ranking are published by UK organizations.

The Shanghai Ranking is published in China. It's published in Chinese, English and 11 other languages. It was started by Shanghai Jio Tong University. It lists Michigan at 27.

Could’ve been worse. At least she’s not headed to UVA.

Her friends are going there. Duh.

Times Higher Education world rankings, below, imply that Sasha and her peers will do just fine. "The only global university performance table to judge research-intensive universities across all of their core missions." Not to mention that Sasha perhaps thinks she can escape the judgmental eyes of DCUM types and their progeny if she goes to a bigger school.

1. Oxford
2. Cambridge
3. Stanford
4. MIT
5. CIT
6. Harvard
7. Princeton
8. Yale
9. Imperial College London
10. Chicago
11. ETH Zurich
12. Hopkins
13. U Penn
14. Univ College London
15. Berkeley
16. Columbia
17. UCLA
18. Duke
19. Cornell
20. Michigan
21. Toronto

She really can't win.

You people think she is choosing a less prestigious college and it's 'strange' for the child of a president.

If she were headed to Yale you'd say she only got in because of who were parents are and/or because she is an URM.

I hope UMich was her first choice and that she will have a great experience.

It’s ranked #27. That’s not comparable to an Ivy.

There are 23729 universities in the world. There are 4,298 in the US.

8 ivy leagues.

8 out of all the schools in the world = 0.0003371402
27 out of all of the schools in the world= 0.0011378482

8 out of all the schools in the US= 0.00186133085
27 out of all of the schools in the world= 0.00628199162

Aka. VERY similar. Nice try

The people who matter (grad schools, employers) know that Michigan is a great school and that's what's important to most people. Well, normal people who aren't picking a college just based off what impresses the neighbors or what car sticker looks best for the moms in the Target parking lot.

Truthfully, lots of people. The more people who have heard of and are impressed by a school, the more prestigious it is.

Ok. I will tell you that compared to most people in the DC area, I am not nearly as caught up in prestige as most other people are. I could care less about cars, am happy to buy clothes at Kohls, don't care about having a name brand purse, shoes, etc. But yes college prestige DOES matter to me, I admit it. So look around you. You really think all these people who are driving luxury cars, wearing designer labels, etc. really care nothing about college prestige? If it matters to a person like me, I think it matters to a great many people.

I wouldn’t buy my clothes at Kohl’s (maybe they have good stuff, I’ve never been to one) but I do drive a luxury car with a Michigan sticker on it.

It's ironic that this thread is discussing why on earth she would choose UMich over an Ivy ... Of course, if she were headed to an Ivy (or Stanford or U of Chicago or whatever) there'd be a heated discussion about whether she only got in because she is black and has influential parents.

She can't win.
+ a million!

Your argument is way too rational for people like PP, who seem to think there's an actual difference between #27 and #1, even given the mathematical reality you pointed out and the well-known fact that USNWR rankings are manipulated BS.

It’s a really fun school with adequate academics. I suspect she’ll rush a certain sorority with her childhood friends — that seems to be a common theme there.

Seriously, the comments about Malia going to Harvard were vile.
