Why would Sasha Obama attend University of Michigan?

I just googled and there's nothing new on Sasha's decision.

I think Michell is the real power deal. She can get an invite from anyone, anywhere, in the world. Her phone calls get answered. I can't say the same for her husband, a politician.

It’s rather unusual for someone who presumably could get into HPY.

Not everyone wants that. Maybe she visited her sister and decided the stuffy vibe wasn't her. We knew of her thru the private school sports circuit in her ES and MS days and she is laid back. Her best friends are going to Michigan and maybe she wanted a big school big sports vibe. Good for her. She already has the name. She can do anything she wants when she graduates.

I had a ton of fun at Michigan. Good luck to her!

+1 An athlete so slightly diff but DD chose a Big Ten school over an Ivy where, senior fall, she was given a verbal offer by the coach and positive pre-read of her academic materials from the admissions office.

but she didn't actually get in to the Ivy in the end?

Ok, and if she didn’t have “terrific parents” she wouldn’t go to a school she wanted to go to?

Shocking!

I agree with you 100%. These parents caught up in prestigious schools for their kids are pretty pathetic.

We have three Ivy degrees among the adults in our family. We have seen the costs and benefits. It is a great education, but we are perfectly happy for our kids to choose another path. Perhaps because Ivies are a reality for us, not a bright, shiny, unattainable object, we are really not hung up on it.

She got into Yale. She turned it down for Michigan.

Did your DD get accepted for sports and chose UF because the team she would be on was better there?

Just leave Sasha alone. It is no one's of our business where she goes to college.

It's ironic that this thread is discussing why on earth she would choose UMich over an Ivy ... Of course, if she were headed to an Ivy (or Stanford or U of Chicago or whatever) there'd be a heated discussion about whether she only got in because she is black and has influential parents.

She can't win.

It’s probably hard to be a celeb student in college. If she already has friends at Michigan or friends going there, it could be a lot more comfortable and fun than dealing with the gawking, agog Yale freshmen.

Maybe she wants to be different from her sister and her parents. That's a common attitude for younger children.

She chose it for the accelerated pre-med program. And because she loves Florida.
