Actually, the entire RM cluster CAN BE impacted by the change in APFO, not just RMHS. Currently, the ES situation was fixed, thanks to the construction of Bayard Rustin ES. I think JW is mostly fixed, thanks to the addition that opened in 2016. But if enough young families move in, ES and MS will be impacted as well. |
Do Town center kids go to outside of RM cluster? Everyone in RM boundary attends RM cluster schools. Building more condos anywhere in RM cluster will mean we are making pathetic situation even worse. |
The situation at RM is "horrible"? What makes RM horrible? I can't find the 2018-2019 enrollment numbers, but 2017-2018 had an enrollment of 2,428 and a capacity of 2,236, which put the school at 109% of capacity. My kid's high school last year was at 106% of capacity, and it was fine. I guess that extra 3% really makes a difference? |
As previously stated, the change is only for the town center. It’s not like the entire RM district would be changed. You’re blowing this out of proportion. |
You’re ricduclous. One small area of increased growth is t going to be the apocalypse. NIMBY’s get in the fallout shelter! They’re building in a 3 block area! Seriously, it’s THREE BLOCKS. Get a grip. |
Would development at Town Center actually have a large impact on enrollment at RM? What percentage of RM students (the high school specifically, not the cluster) currently live in the Town Center condos? I can't imagine it's that many. |
My thoughts exactly. Most people buying condos and renting in these mixed use buildings don’t have kids. |

Some argument presented here are hilarious.
Comments like, it's not horrible. It's a small 3 blocks. it won't add many students. All that is fine then why do you want to increase 120% limit? 120% limit is itself pretty poor, why will you advocate for more? it defies all logic. |
RM started this year at 2495 and capacity is 2236. Students are having science in cart. That makes it horrible. If any new development doesn't add many students then why even bother changing the current 120% limit? 120% itself is a horrible situation and developers and their friends are proposing to take it higher. Pathetic. |

Now some one will say, oh look situation in Kenya is even worse and RM has a way to go before reaching to level in Kenya.
Who cares if some other school is even worse shape. City of Rockville used to have 110% cut off for moratorium in 2015. It was changed to 120% by city in 2015. It's absurd to have 120% or even 110% cut off for moratorium. If school is approaching 100%, there should be no addition condos anywhere in cluster. Kids who can't advocate for themselves but they shouldn't suffer because town center wants to have some grocery stores. |
What is the capacity? If it's 1000, then 106% is 60 additional student (and then extra 3% would be 30 more). If it's 2000, then 106% is 120 additional students, with the extra 3% being another 60. The denominator is as important as the percent of capacity. |
Three blocks of high rises in the suburbs. People with kids don’t buy those. Very few people will be added to the schools. Why don’t you care if we have a failed town center? Now the city council is creating a fund to subsidize failed businesses. I’d rather more people live there and support it without our tax dollars going to these businesses. |
Oh please, people don't shop at those stores because the prices are ridiculous. I bought one thing at Dawson's once, and the price was so ridiculous I'd rather drive to Giants up the road than buy anything at Dawsons. Similar to those boutiques. And I hate that Rockville is subsidizing those failing businesses. Setting the capacity threshold to 150% is ridiculous. MCPS is a large district, and there is only so much money in the pot. MD isn't going to give MCPS more money. I don't want my taxes to keep going up. This stupid move is only going to force BOE to move funds from one needed CIP to RM. I'm not that selfish to take money from other badly needed improvements in other schools. |
Anywhere where the TC kids go would be impacted. JWMS would be impacted. The TC development would impact either Beall or BRES. The South Pike development would impact Bayard Rustin ES. And under MCPS new FAA policy, BOE might decide to move kids from BRES to say RPES, Beall, or even CGES. |
The town center is at Beall. The projections after the move gave it at only 80% capacity so it is fine. There won’t be many kids living in condos in Rockville anyway. It’s not Bethesda or DC. |
