Time for reflection as a dem?

No. At the federal level, democrats are a moderate party. The right is radical. Only one party wanted to continue American democracy. The problem is stupid, uneducated, racist people reading trash propaganda online and fake culture wars drummed up by the GOP.

Teach civics. Teach media literacy. Combat disinformation. Journalists need to call out lies. Of course, now that we’ll have a dictator, we’ve lost control of all of this.

I will be reflecting on how 50% of the country voted for a d-bag convicted felon. It says more about their own values than mine.

Did the reevaluate and change course after the blue wave in 2020? Nope.

Summary of this thread:

Nope, it's not time for Dems to reflect. Not at all, we're doing so well.

This was a reckoning. Thanks to the wisdom of our founding fathers, it was done at the ballot box instead of with violence.

Democrats are the party of stupidity and lack common sense. Trump was right about that. Why would you want open borders, gender studies and critical race theory in elementary school when kids don’t even learn cursive anymore. Why would you support clean energy but allow China to make the solar panels and trade here for free? The pollution from China hits California in 10 days time.

There weren't and aren't open borders.
There isn't and never has been Critical Race theory in elementary schools.
Gender studies is a college level exercise and it is optional for people who want to study it. Don't want it? Don't take it.

re solar panels, that is why the IRA is spurring domestic manufacturing, so we don't have to buy from China, but now Trump is going to undo it.

Agreed. It's like a group psychotic break with reality and I have no idea how/if we can move forward together ever again.

Nope.

Summary = a group of the American people have spoken and they have said they prefer lies. They prefer a strong man who incited an insurrection. All the rest of it about immigration and crime and inflation is just more BS. If they really cared about those things and really understood what drives these things, they would not have voted for Trump.

Dems need to reflect on one thing only, how to deal with the GOP propaganda machine. Playing fair and discussing actual hard policy gets you nowhere.

+1

This election reconfirmed that many people suck.

Yes, how do we move forward given how many people are disconnected from reality/facts? Is there any coming back from this?

Disinformation is destroying our country from within.

I was a Republican for 25 years, they lost me with the Iraq War neocon stuff. I still occasionally vote R and 3rd party downballot, but D on federal elections.

Where I think Dems screwed up are
1. Mishandling the border and immigration policy. While I agree with being humane and taking in refugees - and frankly that is a Christian value, I think Biden was a bit too knee-jerk in blanket rollbacks of Trump policies. Some were indeed horrible policies, but we should have been more selective on others. We needed to do much much better with dealing with fraudulent asylum seekers and should have been pushing something like the Bipartisan Border Bill right from day one of the Biden administration. It was too little, too late.

2. Dems also completely suck at communications and messaging. They need to be more concise and to focus on sound bites. That worked tremendously well for Republicans. Dems do have some excellent communicators like Buttegeig, but he is not the face that needs to be doing the communicating due to the right's virulent anti-LGBTQ hate. Other Dems should study how he communicates. The other part of the communications problem was that the Republicans used Steve Bannon's "Flood the zone with shit" strategy to completely spam every airwave with falsehoods and disinformation which put Dems into a spin playing whack-a-mole trying to deal with it. I'm at a loss for how to deal with that one, though.

Bannon's "Flood the zone" strategy, along with Putin's virulent social media efforts. Not sure how to deal with that. Can't just shut it down without being accused of censorship "WAAAH WE HAVE A RIGHT TO LIE OUR ASSES OFF!" so what do we do? Fight fire with fire? Completely spam social media with viral lies and disinfo about Trump and the Republicans the way they did to us? What are they going to do about it, complain? About something they themselves are guilty of? Censor US? Elon Musk already does that on Twitter. That only further cements their reputation as authoritarian.

I wouldn’t give up the core values of the Democratic Party. The problem is making people aware of how those values actually work for them (worker rights, regulation on industry, social security benefits).

Americans are completely disassociated and don't seem to be able to connect the dots on how things actually work and which things matter more than other things. I for one don't think trans athletes should compete against women either but I think it's absolutely ridiculous to completely throw everything else away over that one issue.

Is there any coming back from this age of disinformation/alternate facts?

It's not that complicated. I think we can all agree that our immigration system is seriously broken. This is a country of immigrants. It's our greatest strength. But having millions of unvetted migrants stream across our border is just wrong. They strain social services, schools, courts, and undermine wages for working and middle class people. There is a lot of resentment that tax dollars are being used to put up migrants in expensive Manhattan hotels. It's not a winning issue for Democrats. Change that.

Inflation has really hurt most Americans. Most people don't have their wealth in stocks. There was zero acknowledgment from Biden or Harris that most Americans are poorer now than four years ago. That's a killer. And neither ever addressed the reality for Americans that everything has gone up except their income.

Violent crime is another one. I saw an interview with the DC police commissioner. The average murder suspect has 11 felonies. That's ridiculous. These violent people should have been in prison a long time ago and their victims should be alive. Progressive initiatives on justice are literally killing people. Again, bad issue for Democrats. Be tough on violent crime.

The trans thing is such a minor issue. But Democrats supporting Title IX did signal to women that Democrats don't support them. It's not unreasonable for biological women to want to have their space in sports, bathrooms, prisons, and so on. And the whole trans women reading to kids in libraries was just weird.

Women's access to reproductive health care is the big issue. But the SC made this a state issue. Those battles are being fought in Missouri. Not in Maryland. It's not a national issue.

And finally youth. There was a 30 point swing in Gen Z support for Democrats. That does not bode well. A lot of young people don't feel like Democrats have their back.

People voted for Trump not because they supported him. But because Democrats are just wrong on so many key issues. Progressives are killing the party. Some basic tuning to make Democrats the Middle Class party would go a long way.
