Is there a "post-truth" majority in the US?

And you know this.

Pretty sure not a single one of the anti-maskers on this thread are scoffing at their surgeons, telling them masks don't work, and demanding they don't wear masks in the operating theater. The whole anti-mask thing is so ridiculously dishonest.

I think you are a little too slow to be participating in this conversation. Try to keep up.

Oh, so you DO tell surgeons to stop wearing masks because according to you, they are ineffective and pointless? WHAT A TOOL you are!

Like I said, too slow for this conversation. You don’t seem to understand the difference between the effectiveness of masks in specific clinical settings versus mask mandates that required, for instance, daycare centers to mask toddlers. Democratic policymakers required masking toddlers long after there was no credible basis for harming children that way.

Well at least now we're getting somewhere. You have now finally admitted that masks DO IN FACT work, when surgeons wear them. From here on out, there's no taking that one back. Masks are indeed useful, helpful and effective.

But then you lost the plot and tried moving the goalposts by saying since toddlers might not be able to properly put on or keep on a mask , it's apparently pointless for anyone at all other than surgeons to wear masks (note that nobody here was even talking about toddlers). Sorry, but that's some harebrained logic there. I'm definitely not the slow one in this conversation. And again, the real-world observational studies did in fact show overall reductions in transmission, toddlers or no.

All this scrambling and disassembling to hide the fact that your people promulgated anti-scientific policies, like the Republicans.

It was your team that kept schools closed contrary to science (shall I point out the mountains of data demonstrating the incredible harm that did?), your team that pushed mask mandates that didn’t work even after there was proof they didn’t, etc. But you are so partisan and blind you can’t admit it.

Don’t come at me claiming that the Republicans are also anti-science. Of course they are. I am not a Republican, anyhow, and will never vote for Trump. But I despise Democratic hypocrisy and partisan blindness. The Democrats are objectively anti-science, just like the Republicans. You are just mad because people see through your cult beliefs.

No. After all of YOUR scrambling and dissembling, YOU ADMITTED THAT MASKS CAN AND DO INDEED WORK. And the science showed that. Not your limited cherrypicked set of clinical-only studies, but the broader set of real-world studies. And, your surgeon. You lost the argument, and now you're whining and spinning and attacking like a toddler having a tantrum. You lost the debate. Period.

Fascinating. You don’t seem to understand that you are talking with multiple posters. I think my initial assessment that you are a little slow was correct. You don’t understand what the word debate even means.

For the record, I have never said masks don’t work. In fact, I explicitly stated they did. But what do not work — as shown by science — are mask mandates. But I think you were one of the PPs who did not comprehend the difference between masks and mask mandates, so that distinction is probably a bit too challenging for you. Bless.

Ahhh there it is, the ole "it wasn't me, I didn't say that, since we're all anonymous I will deny everything and pretend I have plausible deniability."

Sorry pal but you're the slow one if you don't think we can see right through your tired, lame schtick and BS.

So, yes, as observed you don’t understand the concept of multiple posters. And you obviously also can’t understand the distinction between masks and mask mandates. I suppose it’s all a bit challenging intellectually and might be too difficult for you.

Oh really. Well, several pages back, you, or someone with your exact same weird, overly stilted style of posting cited the Cochrane study as evidence that masking does not work and berated the rest of us calling us anti-science for saying masks do work.

Later on, when that argument failed with the continued onslaught of studies and evidence showing the effectiveness of masks, the goalposts got moved to "mask MANDATES don't work" despite again having absolutely no evidence to back that claim up, because the Cochrane study certainly didn't speak to that. Your positions keep eroding and crumbling, yet you are too arrogant and self-deluded to acknowledge what the rest of us see happening, over and over and over again with you and your weak talking points.

I have not posted anything about Cochrane.

You've really distilled post-truth to it's core with this nonsense disguised as paradox. Kudos on contributing to the downfall of society.

Sometimes I wish I could be as simple-minded as you and the other PPs who believe that the Democrats are always on the side of truth and science and right. It would certainly be easier to go through life believing anything my side said was unquestionably always true and right, just because they said it. Never having to entertain a critical thought, never questioning leaders, just always trusting: it is appealing in a way. I’m a little jealous of the simplicity that must bring to your life.

But it was alright, everything was alright, the struggle was finished. He had won the victory over himself. He loved Big Brother.

DP... for simple mindedness, take a long hard look in the mirror. For not one single one of your flaky MAGA talking points about masks and the pandemic has even held up to even the lightest of scrutiny on this forum, along with lacking sufficient evidence to support your cause. And then you have the audacity to feign righteousness and invoke Orwell when the reality is that it's you who is mired in self-delusion and toxic propaganda, lacking a solid footing on facts and reality. You've proven that to us, repeatedly.

Sorry, friend. I'm quite successful in life. Probably quite a bit more than you, in fact.

I find your inability to comprehend that you and the "other poster" completely lost the debate fascinating. Along with your delusional belief that you think you can somehow turn that around by playing games. Fail. Pathetic fail, at that.

I have never voted for Trump and will never vote for Trump. I’m a registered Democrat, just not one that slavishly believes every single thing the Democrats say simply because a Democrat said it. It has been very disturbing to me to watch people like you gain power in the Democratic Party, people who are wholly unable to question anything said by their leaders, who lash out at any science that contradicts the mandated beliefs of the Party. If Biden’s campaign manager told you that you needed to believe that the sky is now neon pink, you’d immediately stand outside and talk about how pretty the neon pink sky is, and how everyone believes the sky is neon pink, and the science shows the sky is neon pink. You’d criticize anyone who talked about how the sky is not neon pink, you’d dismiss any evidence contrary to your new belief, because the Democratic Party told you the sky is neon pink and now you believe that.

I used to believe that the Democrats were the party of science, but people like you, with your party-over-science at all costs ethos, have convinced me otherwise. You are as bad as the MAGA. You can’t think critically, you will never, ever question what you are told, you will never once ask a hard question. You will simply believe everything, because a Democrat said it.

Actually you’ve lost on every scientific point you’ve attempted to engage on, and you don’t even understand that. It’s actually kind of funny.

You are threatened by people like me, who won’t blindly believe everything the Democrats say because a Democrat said it, so you lash out with fury.

The Democrats are losing voters. This is incontrovertible at this point. And what are they doing in response? Acting like you: insisting on rigid orthodoxy of thought, purging the Party of dissent, embracing suppression of speech with an alacrity that would make Xi proud. It’s exactly the opposite of what should happen, but Party power now resides with people like you now, who cannot countenance an independent thought and who will never tolerate science or truth that contradicts the word of a Democratic politician.

You’re going to get Trump elected, you know.

Now I'd like a republican to address why they keep saying Biden has open borders even though he expelled a record number of migrants in 2022 while he had title 42 available. And continues high numbers of returns and removals without title 42. I get that many of you would like more, but that's not open borders. Are you post-truth on that?

Both can be true. Biden’s policies can be accurately described as open border while he also simultaneously expels record number of migrants (because record numbers are coming due to those policies).

I’m not a Republican, though.
Love the irony! But no it can't.

Whoah whoah whoah you are really far off the deep end here, into the realm of irrational.

What here are we supposedly "slavishly believing, just because a Democrat said it?" I believe that masks work. Not because a Democrat said it, but because the science says it works. I believe the vaccines work, not because a Democrat said it, but because the science says it works. I could care less what a Democrat (or Republican) says about the pandemic, unless they happen to be an expert in vaccines, respiratory disease, epidemiology or other relevant fields

What "power" have I gained in the Democratic party? I am not a Democratic official, I am just a regular citizen. One who in fact was for over 2 decades a registered Republican. And you are "disturbed" by "my power" in the party. Really bizarre comment.

And where do you get off claiming I am "wholly unable to question" the party? You don't know me. You don't know a damn thing about me. I do in fact question the party. While I welcome and value immigration, I do think we need to do more to secure the border and to fix our broken system. You could ask Charles Allen about the people who have been hounding him to improve the crime situation in DC. I'm one of them. Please stop making completely unfounded, over-the-top comments presuming I'm some brainless follower proclaiming the sky to be neon pink when you are dead wrong. Again, how utterly bizarre of you.

For someone who's touting being an independent, critical thinker you appear to be nothing of the sort. You have convinced yourself based on a complete lack of understanding and complete misunderstanding of people around you. You have convinced yourself with everything BUT facts and rationality.

Huh? Please read my last post again and explain where I said dems are always on the side of truth. Fwiw, I agree that closing schools in Fall 2020 was not supported by the science we had at the time, not just in hindsight. But the teachers' union resisted in our county. Look through old threads on dcum, and you'll see the arguments.

However, I'm asking about the claim that Biden is allowing open borders, even though he has record numbers of returns and removals, and used title 42 to the max when it was available. Maybe that's not enough for you, but it's not open borders.

"I'm a Democrat" - who spews a constant stream of frothy bile and hatred at Democrats, and who peddles MAGA talking points, every chance you get. And you certainly are no defender of science or truth, given you have not been able to make your case in any fact-based way supported by science, and in fact have repeatedly been slapped down by citations posted by others.

You're wasting your time here. Nobody here believes you and we are nowhere near as impressed with you as you are with yourself.

Tell me, what exactly did you win on? I haven't been on for the entirety of this thread but the things I engaged on were:

1. "Masks don't work" citing the Cochrane study. Except they do work, there are many independent real-world studies from around the world that prove this, and there's a reason that surgeons wear them - because they work. Not a win for your side.

2. "Mask mandates don't work" - claimed, with zero evidence cited to support it. And again, there are numerous studies from around the world which included mask mandates which showed effectiveness. Not a win for your side.

3. "Yabut toddlers can't properly put on or keep on a mask" - sure but thankfully most people aren't toddlers and the toddlers generally have grown-ups to help them with that. You maybe get 0.3 of a point on that one.

4. "Yabut surgeons have to get properly fitted for N95 masks" - untrue. Most surgeons wear the same N95/KN95 commercial ear-loop masks that the rest of us wore during the pandemic. There's no special "fitting" for those. You're thinking about respirators, which is a totally different thing. Not a win for your side.

You didn't win much of anything on any of the discussion that I was part of. What's pretty funny is that you got your ass kicked and can't own up to it, you're evidenly stuck in the denial and delusion stages of grief. And no, hon - I'm not in the least threatened by you, given I kicked your ass.

It's unfortunate that schools were closed but the claim that closing schools was unsupported by science isn't entirely correct. COVID contact tracing data showed that schools were in fact one of the top places for transmission.

I specifically mean elementary schools. Everything we did to fight covid was a tradeoff under uncertainty. We knew young children were at risk under isolation, and they were less likely to spread covid to adults. I really don't want to relitigate that, but it wasn't the tradeoff I supported. Many liberal parents felt the same.

But what about the open borders claim. Will a republican PP acknowledge that Biden is not allowing open borders?

LOL. You didn’t even understand the argument, let alone hold it. I think it’s hysterical that what you wrote above is what you think this conversation has been about. Man. You are so dim.
