It's not OK.

But we're dealing with a private institution that's not funded by tax money and obviously supported by wealthy "people of faith." So unless you go all 21 Jump Street on Covington, how will you fight against the school's claim that this was a non-racist tradition?

This is no different from the anger at Pence's wife b/c she accepted a position teaching art at a Christian school that's anti-LGBT. If people are willing to find other "like-minded" individuals in an effort to create a group, you can't stop them unless they're out murdering people.

You are all trying to fight against people who are comfortable in their niche. They have each other. They have money to support and insulate themselves. What you're trying to fight is a way of life that's been around since the beginning of "civilized" time. In this case, they have money and God on their side.

Do they still do that “tradition”?

Times change. People are becoming more respectful of others. And fewer people are religious. These dinosaurs’ dats are numbered.

I don't know if this practice still exists. But neither I don't trust news "sources" to provide me with an accurate answer. They (right and left sources) are manipulating us - all in the name of the Almighty Dollar.

Then turn off the f*cking TV.

Wow - That's a wonderful bit of advice. Thank you, Mencken, for sharing.

Sometimes you have to stare the obvious for the idiots in the room.

Let’s just say it wasn’t overblown on NPR.

Fewer people are religious? Is that a good thing? Oh, I forgot.....libs also hate religious people.

But how much religious observance is "too much" according to liberals? I don't eat pork or shellfish. Is that acceptable to you? I also fast on Yom Kippur. Is that OK? I don't eat grain products during Passover? Am I overdoing it?

Please tell me. I know the "tolerant" liberals have a very defined notion of how one should beleive and act, and it's hard to keep up with the parameters they set.

Take a deep breath, PP. I am a Catholic and what I would define as the religious left, so we get it from "our side" too. Atheist/anti-religion sentiment does not define the entire left. But religious people do have a responsibility to practice what is preached. I believe that Catholic social teaching is a true reflection of Jesus, and I choose to live it and vote by it - the consistent life ethic. (Although as an American who believes in Democracy writ large I think government needs to be 100% out of reproductive issues.) The problem is that so many right wing religious are authoritarian by instinct and behave and speak inconsistent with their (loudly) stated values. Thst hypocrisy, in my view, begs for an1d deserves a strong challenge. And if you are so weak that you can't reconcile and defend your views without behaving like a defensive child, well......

And if you can't can't respond to a post without lobbying a personal insult, well.....

(But then again, you did say you were a liberal.)

The entire original narrative was a fabricated lie.

Based on the facts that are co.ing out, along with Phillips behavior since, he created this moment to get to the Catholic church. Shame on him for ruining these kids lives.

What lie? The kids were acting like douches.

The kids did not act like douches. Given the circumstances, they showed incredible reserve, particularly the main kid.

If they had not been wearing MAGA hats, every liberal on DCUM and twitter would be applauding them for trying to drown out the racists shouting about sodomy and calling them f*ggots.

Agree. I'm actually impressed with the main kid. He showed a lot of maturity to just stand there. He also signaled his friend to "cut" the insult - which is quite mature considering black guys just called him a cracker.

I'll remember his name. I hope he gets a fine education and becomes a successful professional with a rewarding life.

He will. He has already been embraced by our local community, he will be accepted into a KY state U, and his parents and social network will help him land a great job. Seriously, don't wring your hands for this kid.

Oh look - an adult from that community. Why do you let kids act like that?

Are you living in DC? You know I’m DC kids are worse, right?

I'm leaving because in the first week one teacher had his arm dislocated by a student while another suffered a broken hand. They threatened to rape a female teacher after work. One of my students was arrested in my classroom for fighting another student for "looking at him." That same day, another student was beaten unconscious in the classroom next door. The students intentionally threw laptops from the laptop cart to the ground, shattering them, because they "didn't feel like reading." All of these students are still enrolled. At most they received a two or three day suspension and returned with new shoes, new hairdos, and a new lore among their peers.
They sit in the classes on their phones, they gamble, they throw chairs and flip over tables in what our administration writes off as "attention seeking behavior" and all throughout this someone comes in to informally observe us and tell us how shitty of a job we're doing. They don't suspend or expel, because the goal is to reduce suspension numbers this year. I call parents everyday and, while a FEW apologize and say that they'll try to speak with their kids, the majority say something along the lines of "that's your problem," "I've washed my hands of my child," or "don't call me again."

I substituted once and the several kids were smoking crack in the back as soon as the PowerPoint started. Others have ear buds in. Some sleep. It’s awful

He did not deploy, and he left the service as a private after disciplinary issues. From October 1972 to February 1973, he was classified as an antitank missileman, a kind of infantryman, Carlock said. He then became a refrigerator technician for the majority of his service.

Daniel Paul Nelson, a leader in the Lakota People’s Law Project, said in an interview that his group made the error and that Phillips never told the group he served in Vietnam. The group, Nelson said, “trusted what we had seen” in previous stories about Phillips, some of which also referred to him erroneously as a Vietnam veteran.

So many lies, Phillips is a fraud.

He also broke jail. He was a trouble-maker frim way back.

Yet libs will concentrate their angst against the white kid, who gave a slight smirk for a few seconds.

He has claimed to be a Vietnam Veteran.

My dad was a veteran. He served two tours in Vietnam. Officer in the AF. Career service.
When he talked about himself, he simply called himself a "veteran." He never referred to himself as a "Vietnam Veteran."

This guy used the "Vietnam Veteran" descriptor to mislead people. And his military record is proof of that.

the legal definition of Vietnam Veteran is anyone who served during the war, in any location. 38 USC 4211(2).

That's the definition, for benefits purposes, of "Vietnam Era Veteran" NOT "Vietnam Veteran".

When Natan Phillips was fundraising, held gave interviews about "being spit on when I came back from the Vietnam War"
which is misleading because, well, he never set foot in Veitnam.

More to the point, Nathan Phillips cleary knew the distinction betweeen "Vietnam Vet" and "Vietnam Era Vet" and for decades he's
done nothing to correct the media when the media got is wrong.
Knowing that the media are publishing a false impression of you, and doing nothing to correct, heck, quite to the contrary, fundraising based on it...

This is the point. He did NOTHING to correct the record. Because, he wanted people to believe it.
He is an activist. He is a provocateur. He is a fraud. He approached the teens in order to make a scene.

And, then, he takes his group to the National Shrine, attempts to disrupt the Mass, and issues "demands" from the Catholic Church.
I have no respect at all for this man. I hope he is included in the lawsuit by the teens at the school.

No.
The author of this piece is from NJ. He is projecting his experiences and really has no authority to do so. But, you folks will eat it up.

And yet I live in the area and have known people who went to or send their kids to that school, and have stated thsat this is exactly the experience of many here, and you dismiss me too. So it is clear that YOU are also projecting and that there is no opinion in opposition to your own that you will ever consider valid.

Liberals do not hate religious people. I am a liberal and I am a religious person. I know many, many others. This is a ridiculous generalization and right-wing propaganda and you know it.

I read an OpEd in the WaPo in which the author stated that he became a Republican, because they were the party that believed in religious freedom. I found that hard to swallow. At the present time, Republican party has allied themselves with the far-right evangelical Christians. What they call religious freedom is jamming their version of Christianity, which I would argue is anything but, down the throats of everyone else and allowing people to discriminate against other people in the name of their religion. They liked it when their version of Christianity was considered the status quo and synonymous with what is "American", and they do not like having to take the feelings or perspectives of people who are not Christian into account. It is a nuisance to them, so they try to blame the victims of their ignorance and intolerance, so that they don't have to think or change their behavior.

Real religious freedom means freedom to worship as you want to or to not worship anything at all, and to be tolerant of and avoid discrimination against people who practice religions other than yours. The right-wing media has demonized the word "tolerance" in their campaign to blame the victims of ignorance and intolerance.

I will grant you that right now trying to keep up with what is considered politically correct sometimes feels like chasing a moving target. With our access to so many opinions through social media and regular media, the flood of opinions from so many different groups is overwhelming. It is inevitable that we will say things that offend another person at some time. There is no possible way that each of us with our own limited perspectives and experiences can know what will be offensive to every single person we meet. But if we do offend, all we can do is apologize if we have hurt someone's feelings, see if there is anything to learn, and move on. Sometimes you will get a new perspective that is helpful and valid and carry that forward. Sometimes you will meet a person who is really blowing something out of proportion and you just have to smile and nod and walk away. The negative reactions to "tolerance" usually come from overblown defensiveness. None of us like to feel bad about ourselves or admit we make mistakes, so we try to rationalize our behavior to avoid doing so. Just try to be kind and use your best judgment.

Just a reminder....

The liberals were quick to defend the actions of the students at Howard University who verbally insulted and then stole the MAGA hat from two students from out of town.
"But, their "misbehavior" was ok because the girls were wearing MAGA hats! And, what the hell were they doing on the campus of Howard anyway?"
