The message from the first poster here is just astounding. She must be consumed by hate.

Is this an appropriate reaction for the "crime" of smiling at another?
Yes, Orwell called it a facecrime.
He was a smart man, this is exactly what we witness right now - persecution for committing a facecrime.

It's not OK.

But we're dealing with a private institution that's not funded by tax money and obviously supported by wealthy "people of faith." So unless you go all 21 Jump Street on Covington, how will you fight against the school's claim that this was a non-racist tradition?

This is no different from the anger at Pence's wife b/c she accepted a position teaching art at a Christian school that's anti-LGBT. If people are willing to find other "like-minded" individuals in an effort to create a group, you can't stop them unless they're out murdering people.

You are all trying to fight against people who are comfortable in their niche. They have each other. They have money to support and insulate themselves. What you're trying to fight is a way of life that's been around since the beginning of "civilized" time. In this case, they have money and God on their side.

Do they still do that “tradition”?

Times change. People are becoming more respectful of others. And fewer people are religious. These dinosaurs’ dats are numbered.

I don't know if this practice still exists. But neither I don't trust news "sources" to provide me with an accurate answer. They (right and left sources) are manipulating us - all in the name of the Almighty Dollar.

Then turn off the f*cking TV.

Fewer people are religious? Is that a good thing? Oh, I forgot.....libs also hate religious people.

But how much religious observance is "too much" according to liberals? I don't eat pork or shellfish. Is that acceptable to you? I also fast on Yom Kippur. Is that OK? I don't eat grain products during Passover? Am I overdoing it?

Please tell me. I know the "tolerant" liberals have a very defined notion of how one should beleive and act, and it's hard to keep up with the parameters they set.

Take a deep breath, PP. I am a Catholic and what I would define as the religious left, so we get it from "our side" too. Atheist/anti-religion sentiment does not define the entire left. But religious people do have a responsibility to practice what is preached. I believe that Catholic social teaching is a true reflection of Jesus, and I choose to live it and vote by it - the consistent life ethic. (Although as an American who believes in Democracy writ large I think government needs to be 100% out of reproductive issues.) The problem is that so many right wing religious are authoritarian by instinct and behave and speak inconsistent with their (loudly) stated values. Thst hypocrisy, in my view, begs for an1d deserves a strong challenge. And if you are so weak that you can't reconcile and defend your views without behaving like a defensive child, well......

The entire original narrative was a fabricated lie.

Based on the facts that are co.ing out, along with Phillips behavior since, he created this moment to get to the Catholic church. Shame on him for ruining these kids lives.

What lie? The kids were acting like douches.

The kids did not act like douches. Given the circumstances, they showed incredible reserve, particularly the main kid.

If they had not been wearing MAGA hats, every liberal on DCUM and twitter would be applauding them for trying to drown out the racists shouting about sodomy and calling them f*ggots.

Did you even watch the video? The whole video? Douches. Which some kids will do if you let them.

I blame the chaperones.

If you've ever wondered what the demographic is on DCUM, just take a look at the comments by black people on social media about this incident. Most I've seen have said, basically, "If anyone got up in my kid's face like that, they'd wish they hadn't."

So what does that tell you about the demographic on DCUM?

Don't worry, unlike right wing religious zealots who want to legislate what goes on in your bedroom and your body (if you're a woman), liberals have no interest in criminalizing how you believe and act in private.

Also I would wager more liberals are vegetarian than conservatives, so no worries about not eating pork or shellfish. And the crunchy types tend to love low carb, so you're good about fasting and avoiding grains.

P.S. hate to break it to you, because it melts your narrative, but there's a huge wing of liberal religious pastors out there who have thousands followers. Shall I start to name them for you?

Agree. I'm actually impressed with the main kid. He showed a lot of maturity to just stand there. He also signaled his friend to "cut" the insult - which is quite mature considering black guys just called him a cracker.

I'll remember his name. I hope he gets a fine education and becomes a successful professional with a rewarding life.

He will. He has already been embraced by our local community, he will be accepted into a KY state U, and his parents and social network will help him land a great job. Seriously, don't wring your hands for this kid.

In reality, Phillips served from June 1972 to May 1976 in the Marine Corps Reserve, a service spokeswoman, Yvonne Carlock, said Wednesday. He did not deploy, and he left the service as a private after disciplinary issues. From October 1972 to February 1973, he was classified as an antitank missileman, a kind of infantryman, Carlock said. He then became a refrigerator technician for the majority of his service.

Daniel Paul Nelson, a leader in the Lakota People’s Law Project, said in an interview that his group made the error and that Phillips never told the group he served in Vietnam. The group, Nelson said, “trusted what we had seen” in previous stories about Phillips, some of which also referred to him erroneously as a Vietnam veteran.

So many lies, Phillips is a fraud.

He has claimed to be a Vietnam Veteran.

My dad was a veteran. He served two tours in Vietnam. Officer in the AF. Career service.
When he talked about himself, he simply called himself a "veteran." He never referred to himself as a "Vietnam Veteran."

This guy used the "Vietnam Veteran" descriptor to mislead people. And his military record is proof of that.

the legal definition of Vietnam Veteran is anyone who served during the war, in any location. 38 USC 4211(2).

That's the definition, for benefits purposes, of "Vietnam Era Veteran" NOT "Vietnam Veteran".

When Natan Phillips was fundraising, held gave interviews about "being spit on when I came back from the Vietnam War"
which is misleading because, well, he never set foot in Veitnam.

More to the point, Nathan Phillips cleary knew the distinction betweeen "Vietnam Vet" and "Vietnam Era Vet" and for decades he's
done nothing to correct the media when the media got is wrong.
Knowing that the media are publishing a false impression of you, and doing nothing to correct, heck, quite to the contrary, fundraising based on it...
