Washington-Loving

Yes, was talking about this with people last night. That's what they do in Loudoun Co. Makes things so much easier and without controversy.

Amen. Although, I think I read that Lee in FCPS was named after Lee because of the territorial rivalry of Franconia and Springfield when it first opened.

It was originally named Lee HS after the Lee District but changed its name to Robert E. Lee HS in 1964, around the time of the civil rights legislation. That name needs to go, too.

Unless they don’t - John Champe HS is one of the newer schools in Loudoun.

What's next? Obergefell High?

speak for yourself, dude.

+1

I think about marriage. And love.

Not everyone is a creepy perv.

I also find this proposed name creepy, it just grosses me out

At least he was a revolutionary war hero (who tried to kidnap Benedict Arnold). But, I believe they have gone toward neutral names (Brair Woods, Freedom, Broad Run, Heritage, Park View, Riverside, Stonebridge, Woodgrove, Potomac Falls, etc.).

I actually love the name Cherrydale HS or Maywood HS. Go with something neutral and let the students and staff define the reputation by their behavior/accomplishments going forward.

Cherrydale would be fine and would correspond to a neighborhood in Arlington of considerable vintage zoned for W-L. Same for Maywood although I'd bet people are more familiar with Cherrydale.

Washington-Loving is too weird. Not to be a prude, but does APS really need to hold out particular married or sexual couples as a youth model? If Loving merits a high school name, you just know someone will insist on the names of litigants in gay marriage cases in the future. And I'm fine with my kid learning about these cases, but does it have to be the name of the freakin' school?

Yes, apparently it does. I was truly skeptical of the loaded phrase "virtue signaling" but I just don't know what else to call it. As a name it really is one dimensional - it's just a political statement. For Christ sakes, we all have Facebook, do we need more of those? yes, I know "everything is a political statement." I read more than my share of critical theory. Enough.

Moral Grandstanding although I prefer Virtue Signaling.

I feel the same way about these rapists and white supremacists Robert E Lee, George Washington, and even Thomas Jefferson. Yes their lives were the reality of the history of the United States, but we don’t have to name anything in their honor.

I think that if you feel so strongly that George Washington and Thomas Jefferson are evil that you ought to move to another country.

Loving is an acceptable alternative. I'm surprised at the people who think its funny. Who cares if your immature teen makes fun of a name? It's what they do. It's a weak reason to not use Loving as a school name.

There are several other excellent reasons already covered in this thread why many of us think that the name is not the best choice. And no, I very much prefer that my children who attend W-L not be known as the Washington-Loving Genitals, which apparently what some Yorktown students are already calling them. I'm okay if you think my children and I are immature because of that.
