IU or JMU?

You would prefer your kid to go to the 4th or 5th best school in Virginia over a highly rated state flagship school? Why?

Indiana does not outrank Purdue, Notre Dame and at least 2 or 3 Indiana LACs. Give it up.

They are both perfectly decent schools. But the thought that there is some kind of advantage or prestige in either one is just silly. Graduates of either will do fine.

And IU is a great school for kids from Indiana who don't want to be far from Mommy & Daddy. This is fun!

I am not sure this is accurate. Suburban Chicago sends a lot of students to IU, and it is a significantly longer drive than to Bloomington than, let's say, West Lafayette. It is not Univ of Illinois, either, where students can simply take the train back home to Chicago. And JMU is two hours from NoVa - not like Bloomington where it is an hour to Indy and then (especially if you live in the northern suburbs) another 4.5 hours up 65 and the Toll Way and home. About 40 from my Lake County high school class went to IU - a great choice because after Univ of Ill the public colleges are simply not that desirable (a fact, not an opinion given the falling enrollment at Illinois schools). I competed in D1 athletics in college and found IU not an easy place to get to from the East Coast. JMU a different story.

One thing that is relevant is where you might want to live after graduation. IU funnels a lot to Chicago and Indianapolis. JMU can more easily land one in DC. Get the most out of wherever you go.

Such a bizarre question. As a Virginian, I would never send my kid to Indiana (of all places) when we have so many highly rated schools in our own state. JMU is one of them.

IU. JMU only if your kid needs the ability to come up at least a few times each semester. JMU is a good school but IU is a gorgeous campus and fantastic reputation. So many opportunities. Definitely a notch above JMU.

Dumb take. The only Indiana school clearly better than IU is Notre Dame. IU and Purdue are peers. Each excels in different areas. Purdue is the clear winner for engineering, but sure as hell not for business.

As for LACs, DePauw and Wabash come to mind as offering a high quality education, and they might be a better fit for certain students, but they don't "outrank" IU.

That said, every school I just named is miles ahead of JMU.

DP. IU is ranked 73. Purdue is ranked 43. Nice try, though.

In other words IU is like 6 or 7th in the state.

Not really. IU let’s like 100 percent of applicants in.

+1
I think there's one peculiar IU booster here who wants everyone to believe that IU is a far better school than it actually is.
