IU or JMU?

Anonymous
Am I crazy for feeling like I'd rather my see my kid at JMU that Indiana? He applied to IU as a rolling "safety" (and was deferred at first, but now in), without taking it that seriously, but now it looks like JMU and IU may be only options. He wants IU and I feel like it's just so random. We're OOS for both, and the $ just really doesn't matter. We'll pay for wherever he wants to go. Anybody with experience at either of these? Wants to go to law school, so humanities major of some kind most likely.

There was just a thread on this same issue. Did you start that one too? If your kid wants IU then the issue is settled.

No, not me. There is a thread comparing IU and JMU? How did I miss that?

JMU out of state seems more "random" than IU if you mean IU-Bloomington. The latter is a highly regarded flagship.

With that choice I'd pick IU for sure- it's the flagship and has a lot of school spirit, and a lot of active and good alumni. If in Maryland, then obviously JMU is closer and easier to get to - IU is not conveniently located but otherwise better.

Have you visited IU? It’s impressive. Way nicer than JMU. It is not cheap though. If it’s a real option I recommend visiting.

They are not even the same, in so many ways.

This. It is really, really nice. And exactly the type of college environment you'd want for a classic rah-rah situation.

Not sure it’s fair to say JMU is not “respected” but never change DCUM.

IU. If you’re OOS for both (and kid doesn’t need/want to be within a certain proximity of home), this isn’t even really a choice.

Recently toured both schools. IU’s campus is really nice and the attached town has a lot to offer. Have you toured both? If not, you should. Fit is definitely important. IU is an easy drive from the airport and they have busses to and from campus. My son liked IU much more than JMU (as I said fit is important).

It's tough to beat IU for a kid who wants the traditional college experience.
