I mostly was wondering if this was school specific to my kid’s MS, and it appears that is the case.

I appreciate all the responses, on both sides. It will actually help me formulate a more concise argument when I raise this with admin as to why I find it problematic that they spent an hour on this in HERD/Advisory today.

FWIW, I am not White. I am Latina. (Not Latinx, because that is not even a real word in Spanish).

And just like that the world passed you by.

Damn shame. But you can't make people change. Which is why it is crucial to teach the kids better from the start.

Agreed. Just not BLM or CRT propaganda. I am all for teaching kids to treat everyone with respect. Everyone. White people should respect Black people. Black people should respect Jews and transgender people. Asians should respect Black people. And on and on. And no one should be made to feel bad about their skin color, religion or gender. And calling people racists because they don’t agree with BLM ideology is bullying.

Calling a spade a spade is NOT bullying. Don’t want to be called a racist? Don’t act like one. It’s really not that hard. I’m sorry that you’re uneducated and don’t understand what racism is. There’s always time to better yourself, grow, and evolve as a person.

You are wrong. You are a bully.

Rather be a bully to a racist than a racist. *shrugs*

NP. Your shrug thing is really annoying.

DP. The sad thing is that you're both a bully AND a racist. Nobody else would be comfortable with this forced indoctrination and creation of division in our public schools. And the rest of us that are being called racist aren't either one.

This thread was started because Wood MS deemed it appropriate to spend an hour, teaching kids an entire lesson on BLM today.

Meanwhile, at all MSs, our kids’ Math classes are skipping over material, because there is ‘not enough time’ to teach the entire year’s curriculum.

Strange school system, this is.

THIS! But it makes sense in terms of closing the achievement gap. MCPS knows that low achievers wouldn't be able to do more than half of the curriculum this year so it limited high achievers to the same crappy standard. This is equity folks.

You want them to stop teaching Social Studies in middle school?

That isn't social studies. Would you like them to do an equal lesson on the KKK?

NP. BLM isn't a hate group classified as a terrorist organization, an hour is nothing and no one here has the first clue about what CRT is.

I'm actually disturbed we are just accepting the premise. I don't know what was actually taught where and think it's very likely the OP is simply stirring the pot.

There are several people here who are experts on CRT. We've had to do this to counter racist woke insanity.

Everything Kendi says/writes is CRT. And so is this from someone in the MCPS equity division: https://twitter.com/marya_hay/status/1230546821346471939?s=20 Sowing the seeds of hate. Disgusting.

MCPS is going all in on CRT (critical race theory) which is extremely racist. They probably won't call it that though. Instead look for SEL (social emotional learning) and culturally responsive curriculum. And it's being done during the 8th period connect time.

CRT is not "extremely racist." The only one who is racist is someone who would object to it by characterizing it as ""extremely racist."

Do you actually have a white robe and hood in your closet?

This is CRT in practice, right here in MPCS: https://twitter.com/marya_hay/status/1230546821346471939?s=20

"skin color is a problem that..." = racist

I think this is actually useful because white people get sooooo uptight and take it personally when people point out racism. If more white people understood these concepts, they could look at racism objectively and focus more on the problems and less on getting offended when somebody points out how lots of our institutions favor white people. (I’m white by the way)

But I know people hate hearing that their supposed colorblindness isn’t good enough so I’ll stop there.

If they were highlighting actual racism, I'd agree with you. But MCPS is about to redefine racism in Policy ACA as any difference measured by race if it disadvantages an underserved minority. That means if Asian kids score 20 points higher on a test than black kids, that will be racism. If the black kid calls the Asian kid a derogatory name for scoring better, that won't be racism. This is utter lunacy.

You’re... you’re really this stupid, aren’t you? Yikes.

When you resort to name calling you automatically concede the debate. So thank you.

DP -- hey, if the name fits, and in this case it does, she wins. You're an idiot. Take a seat.

Thank you for agreeing with me that MCPS has gone off the rails.

I did no such thing. In fact, I'm writing a letter to the administration now cheering them for doing this. The pp who is an idiot can continue being an idiot, but she lost this debate badly.

You claiming victory in this debate is like Michael Scott declaring bankruptcy. You haven't even fired a shot yet. I said MCPS was about to enact terrible policy and you didn't counter. You lose. Sorry. Maybe you'll learn to debate when you get to high school or college.

Sweetie. Darling. You got your ass handed to you. Now, I will invite you to sit down. Again.

There was no handing because no punch was even thrown my way. I said "If they were highlighting actual racism, I'd agree with you. I assume you attended an east county school where posturing is more important that content.

OK Troll go away and take your Trumpy idea with you.

If you don't like it leave public school and head right to the lower level learning of the religious private school.

No one is indoctrinating your kid.

Stamped was written specifically to indoctrinate students with CRT. The author says this himself. Whoops. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6D6Ge1VXySo&t=272s

I posted earlier about teaching kinder students about the BLM principles and yes, we do teach them about "homosexuality and transgender" - because we have all sorts of diverse books in our class. Why wouldn't we feature books with diverse family structures? Or use wonderful books like this one to affirm all students?

Guess what? The idea is to teach the children well so that they don't grow up to be like...you. (If "you" are one of the people posting racist/homophobic things on this website)

It's one thing to include other family structures. It's entirely another to encourage decentering the nuclear family (BLM says this is one of its goals). 2 out of every 3 black kids is born to a single mother. Those kids are probably doomed. So BLM has to try something. But we really don't want crazy ideas like this promoted in our schools.

I adamantly object and I am anything but a racist. If I find out this is going on in my kids' classrooms, I will pull them out of class while these sessions are going on. It's really quite simple.

Thanks, but I'm responsible for my children develop thought in these areas, not you, and not the school.

Well as an ordinary member of society I’m glad the school is stepping up because I don’t trust you to do it.

Well, they are my children, so I have the final say. And if you think I trust people like you to do it, you're out of your mind.

Progressives hate that you have the final say and are actively working to change that. The advantages you give you kids by being a good parent are the number one thing creating the achievement gap. if they could just "solve" that issue, they'd get what they want. And they ARE trying. Right now they are hiding what they are doing by excluding lessons from canvas. This wasn't MCPS but it's a good example of what they are doing.

Right....

Let me give you a clue - if you ever find yourself exclaiming that you aren't a racist...you are probably a racist.

Don't worry, you have plenty of company.
