PP here. Thanks so much for that clarification, very helpful. I mean that sincerely. was going to say Section 8 housing but was not sure of the accuracy. That also explains the 2 unrelated families to a bedroom situation many of these kids live in. Some of the immigrants must be legal... For those who aren't and don't qualify, it helps keep the rent managable. I often wondered how that worked out. |
Different Poster here but you are overlooking the fact that many of the jobs that undocumented workers do pay well below the poverty line . A citizen or documented worker getting minimum wage as a bus boy or landscaper with unsteady hours due to what the business needs would not make enough to have file state or federal income taxes anyway. There just aren't many big law undocumented workers making 6 figures so its incorrect to say that undocumented workers are evading income taxes. Now, their employers may very well be evading paying into workers comp, unemployment and SS/Med. Some employers do file taxes for undocumented workers -this is a net gain for the gov't because the undocumented worker is not able to use the benefits or withdraw from Social Security later in life. Overall undocumented workers put more into the government than they take out. |

"The MCPS project is also waste of time because Pat O 'Neil is the queen of hiring consultants and being VERY specific with them about the outcome she wants in the report. The consultants job is to find and create data to support what she wants it show which sucks."
Stop bashing Pat O'Neil. She won, and got more votes than any other candidate. Lynn lost, get over it. And, wasting money on more consultants for this particular study was the student board member's idea. Who decided 17 year olds should have any say, let alone an actual vote on what happens to 160,000+ kids? And after they leave and get into the college of their choice after making a name for themself over a controversial issue? Pat O'Neill added the amendment that said this would go back to the board for approval before moving forward, so they could see what the bids come in at before moving forward. Sounds fiscally responsible to me. It is the MCPS staff that makes the bad decisions, withholds and gives misinformation to the board. |
The Maryland General Assembly decided. |
Yup. Stop bashing the SMOB. That's the law, get over it.

If rezoning does occur, the issues facing transportation will become a logistical nightmare, especially with the magnet school trans patterns.
I think people forget how powerful money is in these cases - not school system money, but family money. Those who can afford million dollar homes in high SES areas can also afford private school. Others with means may move - and even if it's a stretch, many will make the sacrifice. Perception is everything. |
This is not really true. People like to say this because they feel it gives them leverage, but in reality it would better serve the public good to be rid of these leeches. |
Will Pat help us make diversity bussing a reality and end decades of segregation @MCPS? |
Thanks. I'll highlight this important paragraph: The consultant will not recommend specific boundary changes that would require students to shift to different schools, but recommend general areas of potential changes. The school board will not be required to take any action based on the consultant’s findings. |
Persistent, aren't you, Gretchen? |
A logistical nightmare to increase an area's effective school capacity by rezoning some students in an over-capacity school to an adjoining, under-capacity school? How so? And if so, how come DCUM has been yelling for MCPS to do just that for years? |
It is Whitman you want. |
Over-capacity is the PC way of saying desegregation. funny thing about this situation . . . the "understanding" that minorities will benefit by being sent to a school that's either majority white or high SES - That's the blanketed message no one wants to state out loud. The issue is not resolved through busing. This is a simplistic approach that's part of the "blame game." Kids should not be made ashamed of their home school, yet this is the message we're sending by examining this approach. Instead, teachers be provided the autonomy (and respect!) to do what's best for their students. |
