What do we do??

When polled on policy without party attribution, voters overwhelmingly prefer Dem policies. The problem is polarized media and social media where ignorant, gullible people get brainwashed and radicalized.

Meh. Americans really hate Democratic Party policy and performance on illegal immigration, DEI, and trans folks in the girls’ room.

Our policies are fine. The majority support: gun reform, access to safe abortion, strong economy, low employment, and low crime. More a Dem issues: the environment and human rights (including voting, DEI, LGBTQIA). The only thing at major issue is how far to take those human rights. But, that's very nuanced and neither side is handling it well. Also, this last admin was more lax on immigration than other Dems, so the perception is that Dems don't care about immigration, but again there is a lot to discuss there. But, we've stopped talking.

Remember in 2020 there was no GOP platform, so people were voting on nothing.

Agree 100%. Dems have had no real platform since Obama left office because they've had no legitimate leader since 2017. Biden's lack of leadership and poor communication skills put the party in a very compromised position as far as platform is concerned. If a legitimate Dem leader emerges during the 2028 election cycle, the GOP won't have the same success spinning false narratives regarding Dem policies.

It'll take years for it to be rescued from the damage that Biden and progressives did to the Democratic brand. The more effective thing to do is to tilt the GOP to a more centrist Romney/McCain kind of party.

We’ll see a lot of this. Dems won’t win any national elections until 2036 at the soonest. Ambitious Dems will start switching parties.

Don’t even have to “switch parties” in states like VA. No party registration so just choose a primary.

Yeah we get it — republicans love guns, forced birth, and tax cuts for billionaires and are willing to trash the constitution because they don’t like brown people or trans people.

I’m sure not having to share a restroom with a trans person will totally make up for the tanked economy. Yay! Winning!

In 2028, the deciding factor will be how awful the sitting POTUS is and the opposition party will win easily just as is did in 2020 and 2024. This is called "history repeating itself". It isn't rocket science; it's actually very easy to predict for those that pay attention to history.

Everything is cyclical; there are no secular trends. Nothing we have done or are doing now can hurt our long term prospects.

Ambitious voters can vote in any primary; ambitious politicians will start switching parties.

I’m liking the new term “forced birth.” It is way better than “pro life”

I think and hope you're correct.

Feeling so hopeless and just want to do something. Can’t believe it’s gotten so bad. Do we just wait and watch the bleeding continue? How do we stop the bleeding? Collectively, surely we can do something? Jeff, I’ve been reading your blog posts - clearly you are very knowledgeable and bright. Any ideas?

I recently learned about a group where I live that started with a few USDA and VA employees locally who were worried, and one of them happened to be connected to the group Indivisible. Our reps are avoiding town halls (actually, they seem to be hiding generally) so right now they are working on organizing and independent town hall. They have some independents and Republicans as well as Dems/progressives and the group has grown quickly. The goal at the moment is to organize an independent town hall and people have volunteered to be part of specific task groups. They have also connected with the local League of Women Voters, who hesitated and first and now are interested (but will not be able to commit to anything until fall). The aim here is to concentrate on non-partisanship and civility while also getting individual stories on record (including short video statements to be part of a larger video project).

Look for citizen groups like that. I went to a meeting of the above people, they had been meeting at a single table at a coffee house and yesterday the place was completely packed, chairs were borrowed from someplace else as the place filled up and they are now seeking a larger meeting place.

Depends on what you mean by long term and by prospects.

Trans people are people. Period.

Where reasonable people can disagree, IMO, is over whether a trans woman should be allowed to compete in women's sports if she still benefits from male hormones and the resulting muscle, etc. There could be actual physical standards in competitive sports that address ability and not gender.

No one of any significance thinks biological males should be allowed to compete in women's sports. This narrative is made up MAGA bull shite.

The term "biological males" (or females) is not that clearcut. And before you say that, for example, intersex conditions are rare, you still have to be able to make room for those situations, so where are you on that? (estimated people with intersex conditions in the US is more than 300,000).

You can’t let 300,000 dictate the lives of 330 million. These fringe issues need to be pushed to the fringe, for example Trump lied that he is pro IVF, is for abortion in certain situations just to get the vote. Frankly, democrats need to lie too, they will end up supporting intersex people but first get into power.

Old rules are out of the window, democrats can’t win by being goody two shoes.

Way to go MAGGOT. You pointed out an exception. Otherwise, I think/hope you are smart enough to get the drift.

Democrats biggest gamble was courting the Hispanic vote at any cost, that plan royally backfired as almost 60% Hispanic men voted for Trump.

It’s time to get off the immigration bandwagon, especially illegal border crossings. If democrats don’t come out with a sensible immigration policy that appeals to average Americans they won’t win elections. Joe Biden’s administration made a mess of the border and as a direct result of that failed policy a convicted felon is now our president.

I am beyond shocked as to what the hell Mayorkas was doing, Trump fanned the flames of this issue and won. Lots of other factors also played into his win but this was a major one.
