Any Democrat voting for McCarthy would have been vulnerable to a primary challenge— “this guy voted for a lying, MAGA, Jan 6 denier, forced birther for Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives” is the takeaway for their constituents.

Trump is ineligible under the current rules, which cannot be changed under an interim speaker. Scalise is your hard right dreamboat.

That “independent” voter puts a lot of blame on the one functional party and none on the gang that tried to overthrow the government. That’s weird. They have no point to make; they just love the GOP. “Independently,” of course.

I was surprised that this really did seem to be the last straw. I thought that those comments about Dems trying to shut down the government fell into the category of usual political bluster.

No, your point is that you can't seem to recall that there hasn't been a time in the modern era, or any era, where members of the opposite party ever voted for the speaker nominee, but you somehow expect it to have happened here. You made your ignorance clear with your first post and you are doubling down on it here. Congratulations.

The fact that the Democrats tried to make a deal with Qevin because they knew he was the least bad option and Qevin wouldn’t do it because he’s still the worst says everything anyone needs to know about the total and complete fecklessness of the GOP.

Let me explain it to you then. The opposition party never votes for the majority party’s candidate for speaker because they don’t support his policies.

Thats fine, but this will be on the Dems when CR is over in 45 days and republicans could not elect a house speaker.

Once again: McCarthy is not a moderate. He's a Trumpster, a MAGA, and 1/6 supporter. If you support McCarthy, you support the 1/6 extremist team who tried to overthrow our democracy.

in doing research I can't seem to find examples of the minority side voting for House Speaker. So please stop trying to blame democrats.

Let me ask independents this - why was it ok for McCarthy to not keep his word? He went back on every deal and then tried to blame democrats when he has the majority. Remember, Pelosi had the same slim majority last Congress and was ALWAYS able to get her people in line. and while some of the bills did garner a handful of republican support, that wasn't needed. She could pass the bills with her majority. So you're blaming Democrats for McCarthy's failure to govern. How many times did he say he doesn't want to work with dems and cut deals with them? So it's ok for him to be stubborn and not reach across the aisle?

And it doesn't matter what MAGA speaker they put in that job, they will have to cut some budget deal EVENTUALLY with the dems to not shutdown the government. Sure the house may pass some extreme budget on party lines, but no way will it pass the senate or get signed by the president. So they will have to go back and negotiate something that will pass. The senate is sensible and have a bi-partisian agreement.
