If only McCarthy had been willing to make a deal with the same people who bailed him out of the exact scenario you describe only the week before. McCarthy didn’t want democratic votes. He said so plainly. His allies— per politico— begged for them, but he was not willing to work with Democrats to keep his job. |
More people voted for Jeffries in January than for McCarthy in October. If Republicans in the “center” really fear the cuckoo option, they will get the chance to do so again. How likely do you think that is? |
McCarthy supported the insurrectionsists, voted against certifying the election, voted against aboirtion rights, voted against Ukraine - he isn't a friend of Democracy and he didn't want the dems help. What exactly are you expecting? |
Honest to god - what are you saying? That voting for democrats is somehow not a thing we can do without being in bed with the right wing crazies? No democrat believes that Kevin McCarthy should be speaker. Elected democrats didn’t vote for him in Jan and they didn’t vote for him in Oct. The democrats opinion usually doesn’t matter when they are the minority party. But now, somehow they are supposed to vote for a speaker that nobody who elected them wants to save the republicans who don’t know how to govern from themselves? Really? |
All those Republicans concerned that democracy is at stake can choose a sane option, and vote for Jeffries, no? Problem solved, there will be no further drama until the next Congress is sworn in. Oh you don’t think they should do that? If you didn’t have double standards, you’d have no standards at all. |
oh, now all of a sudden Rs are all "we need to stick together". LOL |
F all y’all Republican. Every single one of you need to be locked in a looney bin |
Democrats are not going to vote for any Republican for Speaker without institutional changes. It isn’t just about the Speaker. The House is almost evenly split, about 51/49, but Republicans have 9/4 control of the Rules Committee which determines the terms of debate and whether amendments can be offered on the floor. Republicans have a 34/27 advantage on the House Appropriations Committee. So Appropriations will report partisan Republican bills and then Rules won’t make Democratic amendments in order, so they can’t even get a debate and up or down vote. McCarthy stacked these committees with partisan Republicans to push their dumbass agenda. None of that has changed. |
Democracy's not at stake. The Republican Party is at stake. If you can't tell the two apart, you're part of the problem.
We'll have a speaker as soon as someone acceptable to 50% of the House is put up for a vote. We can do it the easy way or the hard way. We already tried the hard way so maybe let's do the easy way this time. |
Now you care about those things? Just because McCarthy got booted? |
