Two children killed by family pet

Anonymous
Some more details have emerged.

Apparently she was wearing the 5 month old in a front carrier at the time, the dogs ripped him off her. They attacked the two year old first and the mom tried to save her and they turned on her and the baby. She tied to shield the kids with her body.

Apparently the mom had been bitten and wanted to rehome the dogs but the Dad refused. I wonder if she debated leaving. The choice not to will haunt her for the rest of her life, I'm sure.

So unbelievably sad. How did it finally end? Did someone come home and intervene? Did the police arrive and restrain the dogs? Also lol at the people writing on my Facebook moms page that any dog can bite. Yes, totally true. This wasn’t a bite. This was a mauling. You never read about babies being mauled to death by family doodle.

When I see any dog that looks like it could be a pitbull walking down the street I make my child stand behind me. In almost all other ways I am a pretty free range parent. I allow “risky play” on the playground, let them take a lot of physical risks, sleepovers etc….but these dogs terrify me and I don’t care if I look hysterical. The owners usually seem to take a bit of pleasure in my discomfort.

Do any of you do this too?

This thread is triggering me a lot. We have two pitbulls in the family and a brand new baby.

These parents will live with the consequences forever as it is. There is nothing worse.

Not enough for me. This was no freak accident. This was criminal negligence that resulted in the death of two children. I don’t think prison time should be out of the question in these situations.

+ 1 million. I'm tired of hearing these stories. It is just as often someone ELSE'S kids, too. It is a mission of mine to get these things banned. There is no logical reason for them to exist and anyone that disagrees is a frigging idiot.

NP. Totally agree. Even if someone's specific pit bull (or pit bull mix) is "sweet" blah blah -- even if the dog WERE genuinely good-tempered overall, the dog's anatomy is still a pit bull anatomy. And their jaws are designed to deliver horrific bites to kill. It's not just about demeanor or supposed viciousness. It's about how any pit or pit mix has the physical equpiment to crush and rip with incredible force, much more than most other breeds of dog. So if even the "nicest" pit/mix that's been well socialized and trained gets frightened suddenly--that dog is going to deliver a bite that is simply going to be vastly worse than if the dog were some other breed. It's about mechanics as well as temperament. But pit bull lovers refuse to believe that despite the fact it's anatomy, physics, mechanics.

It's not about mean people hating pit owners' precious, darling, sweet and oh so misunderstood dogs.

It's about people telling them, the gentlest dog on the planet can still bite if startled or frightened; why have a dog where if it bites only ONCE in its entire life, that ONE bite could crush a child's skull or rip out an adult's throat because that's what its jaws are built to do, and that build cannot be altered by all the training and love in the world?

My dearest friend has a pit mix who is nervous around people except her. I know not to engage her on the topic of pit bulls/mixes. BUT she always puts the dog into "doggie day care" for the day when anyone comes to visit her because she knows and accepts that her dog is not going to be happy with people in his territory other than her, and she wants guests to be relaxed. I appreciate that more than I can say.

You are actually incorrect. I am not a fan of, or advocate for, pit bulls in any way. But spreading misinformation does not help your cause. There are many factors that contribute to the Pit Bull's deadliness (the breeding and what is done with them/what they are bred for), but their bite force is not the predominant factor. Nobody is trying to ban German Shepherds, Mastiffs, etc all of which have a stronger bite.

Forgot the link. https://petkeen.com/dogs-with-the-strongest-bite-force/

Wasn't the point about locking on and not letting go, not the physics of F = m * a.

Do. This is also false

That is a tough situation but imo you cannot allow your young children around them, ever. There are some dogs in our family that could possibly nip and I allow my children around them rarely and with trepidation. Pits can kill them

I googled and found the website below, but is there another organization you recommend to which we can donate?

So do you say everyone who disagrees with you is am idiot or is that just for people who realize not all pit bulls attack and maul other dogs or people? You know rational people. Not you of course

Most dogs can kill. German shepherds, chows, dobermans Huskies even labs. You are fooling yourself if you think otherwise.

I needed reconstructive surgery after being bit in the face by a basset hound as a kid. Still scarred. Young children shouldn’t be left alone with any dog.

Many dogs can kill, but by and large, they don't. Not to the extent of pits. 6% of the dog population responsible for 65% of fatal maulings. It's what they were bred to do. I'll always be careful around any dogs but I'll roll the dice with a Lab anyday over a pit.

Like in your house or a family member that occasionally visits has them?

If first, I would seriously consider giving them up:

Hopefully it’s triggering you enough to make some changes in your life. If the putt bulls are in your own home get rid of them. If in a family member’s do not visit them with your children or allow them to bring their dogs to visit you. It’s not that difficult.

My Golden retriever and I were attacked on a walk by a “sweet family dog” pit bull. They had a sitter who was afraid of off and put it outside. He broke through his fence and came after us, running down the yard and down the street after us. We did absolutely nothing besides walk by. My dog was afraid of dogs on leash after that until she died. The only reason I got him off of her is that he had a choke chain which I grabbed and pulled as hard as I could until he couldn’t breathe. I held him thrashing like that until someone came to help me.

I wish nothing but ill on those dogs and especially people who have them. I also blame no kill shelters placing their “lab mixes” in homes that have no business with those dogs, I am still nervous walking by barking dogs in their yard and it’s been 15 years since that happened.
