These parents will live with the consequences forever as it is. There is nothing worse.

Not enough for me. This was no freak accident. This was criminal negligence that resulted in the death of two children. I don’t think prison time should be out of the question in these situations.

+ 1 million. I'm tired of hearing these stories. It is just as often someone ELSE'S kids, too. It is a mission of mine to get these things banned. There is no logical reason for them to exist and anyone that disagrees is a frigging idiot.

Eff you, pit bull owners. They should be spayed and neutered out of existence.

Just chiming in to say that I agree with most here - we should have a national ban of this breed.

Except when the dog kills someone outside of their family. Which happens a lot.

I agree we need a ban, but it would need to be enforced. There is a ban in PG County and you’d never know it walking around.

They're are plenty of animals that are illegal to own as a pet. Pit bull should be on that list.

How consequences for the owner would help who got killed or mauled? Someone going to jail or paying fine would fix their damage and loss and trauma?

NP. Totally agree. Even if someone's specific pit bull (or pit bull mix) is "sweet" blah blah -- even if the dog WERE genuinely good-tempered overall, the dog's anatomy is still a pit bull anatomy. And their jaws are designed to deliver horrific bites to kill. It's not just about demeanor or supposed viciousness. It's about how any pit or pit mix has the physical equpiment to crush and rip with incredible force, much more than most other breeds of dog. So if even the "nicest" pit/mix that's been well socialized and trained gets frightened suddenly--that dog is going to deliver a bite that is simply going to be vastly worse than if the dog were some other breed. It's about mechanics as well as temperament. But pit bull lovers refuse to believe that despite the fact it's anatomy, physics, mechanics.

It's not about mean people hating pit owners' precious, darling, sweet and oh so misunderstood dogs.

It's about people telling them, the gentlest dog on the planet can still bite if startled or frightened; why have a dog where if it bites only ONCE in its entire life, that ONE bite could crush a child's skull or rip out an adult's throat because that's what its jaws are built to do, and that build cannot be altered by all the training and love in the world?

My dearest friend has a pit mix who is nervous around people except her. I know not to engage her on the topic of pit bulls/mixes. BUT she always puts the dog into "doggie day care" for the day when anyone comes to visit her because she knows and accepts that her dog is not going to be happy with people in his territory other than her, and she wants guests to be relaxed. I appreciate that more than I can say.

You and your friend’s other visitors are safe, but not the dog handlers at the doggie day care. That nervous dog can snap at anytime and at anyone.

A great site for information on dog attacks.

4.5 million dog bites a year, over 350,000 requiring emergency room attention, almost 30,000 needing reconstructive surgery. About 45 fatalities a year.

65% of injuries and deaths are caused by pitbulls. Then about 10% by rotties.

Banning pitbulls would take away 65% of the injuries and deaths. Seems like a reasonable step. They are a banned breed in many countries.

I've been around dogs my whole life, including bigger fogs like goldens and a St. Bernard. I've been nipped or jumped on before. But when I was 15 I was attacked by a pit owned by a family I babysat for. The dog started jumping on me trying to get food I was feeding the kids. I did a very gentle push off I have done with family puppies a thousand times and the dog just snapped and went after me. Grabbed me by the arm, dragged me down and would not let go. I honestly thought in that moment Inwas going to die. The older kid got the dog to stop, fortunately. I still have the scars on my arm.

There is something really wrong with pit bulls.. They straight up just decide to kill.

My friend's puppy was killed by a pit at doggie day care. They're not safe around any living thing.

THIS is the problem with pit bulls. Other dogs certainly will bite. Have bitten people and it can be bad if it’s a child or on someone’s face etc. HOWEVER
, pit bulls have something called “gameness “. Gameness was Bred into them so that when they were fighting or trying to bring down a bull they would not stop, never let go despite any pain to themselves, fight to the death, fight to kill, and keep attacking .

A German shepherd can inflict damage with a bite, but they will bite and be done . They won’t rip you to shreds until you are dead and eat you. Not to mention pit bulls are “triggered” very easily whereas you’d really have to piss off another Breed. Does it make sense to own an animal that needs special conditions (that are unrealistic like no babies moving or crying or startling them) to NOT be triggered and then kill someone ???

I hate this breed and anyone with an ounce of common sense and logic should join the fight to have them banned and somehow let the breed die out .
