Taylor Swift is awful (and her music isn't even very good)

Oh come on. Good producers help every artist.

Yes! Hello all Brittney fans! We all know she cannot actually sign.

Straw man argument. Butch Vig helped Nirvana. Nigel Godrich helped Radiohead. Producers help everyone.

Because you can’t read what you’re responding to… PPP said “Good producers help every artist.”

Precisely. Not just artists that don’t have a lot of talent on their own. So bringing producers into it is kind of irrelevant.

Courtney Barnett writes all her own songs and, even more impressive, her songs are good.

I like both artists.

You’re welcome.

Like, can you just not step on our gowns, OP? We see you over there on the internet, comparing all the girls who are killing it

+1 She's pretty in a "perfect shade of lipstick, all dresses look good on a skinny body + fake blonde hair"kind of way. Plus she's rich and famous, and her songs are singable. So she's doing 1,000 better than the rest of us on DCUM. I am not a "Swifty" but I don't understand someone wasting their time hating someone like her. Not liking pop music, fine. Hating Taylor Swift? Something about you.

Why is Taylor Swift’s “whiteness” and blonde hair so central to any discussion of her? We don’t continually reference Rihanna’s skin and hair color, imagine the invective if we did!

Who mentioned her whiteness?

OK, I will: Patsy Cline. Crazy, Walkin' after midnight.

Okay, just the female singer/songwriters:
Johnette Napolitino,
Lauren Hill,
Grace Slick,
Billie Holiday,
Kate Bush,
Allison Krauss,
Dolly Parton,
Amy Winehouse,
Missy Elliot,
Adele

Taylor Swift is okay, but she just scrapes by compared to many great female singer/songwriters

I like many of the singers you listed but can’t say I’m as familiar with most of their discography, other than Alison Krauss whom I love but she does not write her music. You clearly prefer strong (singing) voices and Taylor herself would say her voice is not the best. Taylor’s strength is her songwriting.

And her persona. Not everyone can pull off being a star, no matter how good their songwriting or singing is.

Most singer songwriters do. It’s part of the gig.

I agree that many singers and bands write their own material. However, most hugely successful pop stars do not. It’s basically Swift and Ed Sheeran.

Not to everyone. I don’t find her songs interesting. They’re relatively interchangeable.

OP in her opening post and also the linked article amongst the many other articles.

Ok, but it’s fair to say that everyone who is a star is able to pull it off. Swift distinguishes herself from other music stars through her songwriting. Teenage girls related to music written by a teenager.

Courtney Barnett writes all her own songs and, even more impressive, her songs are good.

She has 3 studio albums to Taylor’s 9. And she’s two years older. So not exactly prolific.

Quality over quantity.
