Eagle Scour is common in the top applicant pool, as is “summer job” and “captain of a varsity sport.” Don’t count on it. |
Yeah, I’m sure you’d like that.
|
I’m not that PP, but 4.2 isn’t going to cut it no matter how it’s “calculated” in their applicant pool — well, unless maybe you’re an Olympic athlete. |
The LAC is not diverse based on % of black students unfortunately. Are you looking to stay in Virginia? Only t25 colleges or t50 national universities? I wouldn’t say many are diverse in terms of black kids within these criteria but I also care about location and I’m ok with a PWI in an economically and racially diverse (and fairly “safe”) location. |
Race isn’t a required question, tho. |
Most selective LACs aren't very diverse outside of maybe Amherst. However, there are some very good LACs out there that have good graduation rates, want to increase diversity and can provide an excellent education. |
Ah, so they are ranked on SAT scores, which (a) are probably self-reported and therefore skewed to the high end, (b) have no direct bearing the quality of the HS and its curriculum and teaching, and (c) is mostly reflective of the HHI on the feeder zip codes. Got it. Highly useful ordering, then. |
This is true but a school like Kenyon is in the middle of nowhere and was crossed off our list immediately while the University of Richmond or any in NY or Boston were considered. |
Not looking to necessarily stay in VA Not that picky about rank. Would like T150 at least |
Quite a few are more diverse than Virginia public colleges. |
Oberlin is 60% white, about 6% black. Large number of multiracial students. But it’s President is an amazing black woman - just a fabulous leader through COVID and a great communicator. She really does a lot to stress the we are one community” aspect. They are very proud of their history of being the first college in the US to integrate, being a stop on the Underground Railroad, etc. they have Afrikan (their spelling) heritage housing and living communities for black science students and black men, etc. there is also a presidential initiative to hire more diverse faculty. They also do a lot for first gen and LGBTQ students. I think it would be hard to find a more well meaning community. Which I realize is different than always getting actions right. For example, my white UMC very opinionated son has started saying things like, “I don’t think I have the life experience to criticize” x,y,z issues that predominately affect poorer students, LGBTQ, URM, women. Which is a start. On a lighter note, the Afrikan House has an open to all cafeteria that serves a Sunday night dinner widely agreed upon as the best food on campus. And, he asked me if it was disrespectful to eat there since he wasn’t black. (No unless you behave disrespectfully towards others, facepalm— so work in progress). It’s a very diverse (in more ways than race) and accepting community. It’s worth checking out to see if it’s what you want. They have particular strong initiatives for URM STEM students, with a realization that black students are under represented in science PhDs |
UCLA is in a state with 40 million people. |
And also is much newer than UVA so can grow and has grown - same with Cal. |
The land around UCLA is more developed and much more valuable than the area around UVA, so not sure I agree that it is in any way easier. |
But UCLA and Cal were built to be enormous universities-UVA was not - hence less than 4,000 slots for 51,000 students but by all means continue to split hairs! |
