I'm surprised this isn't a straight up rejection.

That’s a rude comment made to someone willing to share. GPAs are calculated differently and aren’t everything. I’m sure the student has some great other options too! Good luck with the decision making process!

Sounds like a comment a douchewhoo would make. One from "THE University" as they refer to themselves.

UVA is small, but not the only good school in Virginia.

Small?

UVA has less than 4,000 seats for the first year class. It’s not huge like UCLA, Cal or Michigan. So 51,000 applications for 4,000- slots.

UCLA is in a state with 40 million people.

And also is much newer than UVA so can grow and has grown - same with Cal.

The land around UCLA is more developed and much more valuable than the area around UVA, so not sure I agree that it is in any way easier.

But UCLA and Cal were built to be enormous universities-UVA was not - hence less than 4,000 slots for 51,000 students but by all means continue to split hairs!

Not splitting hairs. What you are describing is not at all unique to Virginia and UVA. UCLA had 150,000 first time applications (non-transfer) for 6,600 or so spots.

If kid got into UVA arts program, can he take some comp sci classes too? Did not go to uni in USA so don't know how this works

+1 have never heard this, seems PP has delusions and probably lives with cats and unicorns.

CS at UVA is in both the Arts & Sciences school and the engineering school.

Or from someone who pays attention that the cutoff GPA is generally around 4.4.

Like what 30 years ago? Haven’t heard anyone say that ever other than folks on this board bashing UVA.

Well that settles it! Someone said there “used to be a car sticker”. Lol. My uva grad says no one ever said this during his four years there

They also used to sell t-shirt at Mincer’s that said “we’re not snobs, we’re just better than you.”

Highest math?

Yes. But Asian male.

Wow I’m really sorry for your kid PP. To be flat out rejected from UVA and waitlisted at Tech with those stats is completely insane. I’m guessing your kid is interested in engineering and being an Asian male seems to be the worst thing to be for Stem majors. Has he been excepted anywhere else? I hope things work out for him!

The WL at VT is likely an acceptance--VT does this a lot for high stats kids (look at their record).
