Don't look for tweets to confirm your own anxiety. I'm not saying "everything is going to be fine," but it is important to remember that Twitter posts are designed to get lots and lots of clicks. Take a deep breath and evaluate your own situation.

Here are some numbers available at the VDH for children 0-9 years old:

25,572 total cases
296 kids hospitalized
2 deaths

My whole family including kids are vaccinated so we hope to avoid the worst of this, but I think it's folly to look at kids in ICU wards and not see that Delta can easily mean very serious consequences for kids who aren't vaccinated whereas a year ago such results were anamolous. Still I keep seeing comments online from people who aren't concerned at all either because they haven't reckoned with the deadliness of the Delta strain at all or because they are simply in denial about the new surge it has been bringing. La la la la and meanwhile Florida and Louisiana are out there telling everyone out there "hey, hold my beer!" Sure, we haven't seen these numbers in Virginia yet, but those effects can easily and quickly creep north and east as people and kids come home from their summer camps and vacations (how many posts did I read in the Disney thread three months ago from parents making plans because things would be fine by now and planning to pretend their toddlers were younger than they really are to escape Disney's mask requirements? But I digress.).

Nevertheless, cheers and thanks for the stats; real facts are always helpful.

Ventilation woman and the panic porn brigade are at it again.

We were just at Disney World last week, maskless (except indoors where it's required). We go maskless here and have been maskless all summer (except where legally required), as is pretty much the majority of the United States (and Europe too since they don't mask kids under 12 there).

My kids also flew in a plane, rode in a car and went swimming in the ocean, lakes and pools. Those activities probably entailed more risk than COVID. Did we consider not doing them? No.

Yep and this is why we are where we are with rising numbers. thanks a bunch.

Wait wait, hold up. I know DCUM might be the worst place in the world to get factual information, but...

Isn't there literally a law, passed by the state legislature and enforced by the governor's executive branch, that will prevent the year in the entire school system starting from anything other than full and in person learning? And even then if a class needs to go virtual, it's class by class, rather than the whole system?

Am I getting "whooshed" by these posts?

You're quite obsessed with a person who kinda disappeared from the conversation.

They may still be running the Twitter feed, but Smart Restart is really living rent free in your head.

Yes! There is! I guess they could delay the start date if they really wanted to, but that’s about it.

Oh, never mind. Ventilation Lady and her crazy crew are showing up now on the Arlington Helping Each Other Page, trying to be relevant again.

I saw that. I hope she does end up homeschooling and leaves the rest of us alone. I also hope APS isn't listening to them anymore.

I feel like we're back in February, when SR was predicting we'd all end up dead. Turns out hybrid went okay for most people. Some classes quarantined, but everyone lived. I think the Fall will be the same, even with the Delta.

What angers me about APS is the complete disregard for the community, teachers and students. It's so obvious how they are avoiding addressing learning loss, and acting like the last 15 months were normal. Letting go of teachers 2 weeks before school is supposed to start is unacceptable.

These are our kids and their teachers and Duran and the SB don't seem to care at all

Especially given the amount of funding he invested in the DL program. This could be a great way to justify his spending. I could use some reassurance here - can anyone in APS enlighten me?

In Arlington County, hospitalizations are down, ICU use is down and no one has died from COVID since June 30; only two deaths since June 7. Stop freaking out.

+1 This is not FL or TX where they are running out of ICU beds.

I don't get the feeling that they are pretending the last few months are normal. I also don't feel like they are avoiding learning loss, they just aren't dwelling on it because that's not productive. The reality is that some teachers do lose their jobs right before the school year, even in non-Covid times. If the enrollment drops they don't keep them around. I know it sucks. I lost mine at the beginning of summer and just got it back this week.
