The person who buys one gun for home defense is way more likely to have it improperly stored. He’s not interested in guns and often has no training or background, and will stick a handgun or shotgun in his closet. That’s how accidents happen. |
The former, obviously. But the people who keep arsenals and own assault rifles and the like seem less likely to be responsible gun owners. |
|
Seem? Can you explain why, beyond gut feelings? |

the GSS number of households some people are using is "self reported gun ownership", not actual gun ownership which is estimated at about 60%.! People telling a stranger that they have a gun at home despite all modern training not to. It is estimated to be a 50% under-count, ie about 60% of Americans own guns.
DC has 26% percent gun ownership in five peer received studies. GSS which is face to face recorded answer gets 1% people -- especially in cites, especially people under 50, and espcially minorities -- do not tell pollster they have a gun! Would you?? why do you think over the past 30 years NRA approvals of all Americans went UP from 38% to 58% and the number of people who know a firearm makes home saferfrom crime went UP from 35% it 63% the past 30 years? If you are not a criminal, owning a gun makes our household about 20% safer from violent crime than the average household. http://assets.pewresearch.org/wp-content/uploads/s...5.04.01_guns_Safer-260x367.png http://content.gallup.com/origin/gallupinc/GallupS...OLL/owy2uwy4okasxwgzgp5fja.png http://content.gallup.com/origin/gallupinc/GallupS...OLL/z1glhmw4sksuic7lekpteq.png |

This thread has a lot of crazy responses on it. Who needs 8 guns? Well a hunter does. You aren't going to shoot a duck with the same gun as a deer. We do live in the DC area and hunt. We've had lean years where we can't afford meat and eat deer and wild game out of our freezer only. In more rural areas most people live like this. We are big nature lovers and a think deer hunting is more humane than how cows are butchered or raised.
Deer populations are out of control due to humans, so we could either allow more hunting or we pay hunters to euthanize these deer We have maybe 10 guns. Some are inherited but plenty are used. We have one handgun and the rest are rifles and shotguns. Dh serves overseas in war zones and uses the handgun to train before missions. He carries a m16 overseas but we don't own any assault rifles. I personally don't like assault rifles or semi automatics. I shoot skeet for fun. All are locked, unloaded and in a gun case. The handgun is in our safe with a lock through the barrel. I'm interested in gun control. Our worry is that "armor piercing" weapons will be outlawed. Any deer rifle could go through Kevlar. |
Because an AR-15 is not a hunting gun, nor does it require a high level of skill to use. The only reason a civilian would own one is because he thinks it's "fun" to shoot or because it gives him a sense of power. Both of those qualities are less likely to be found in a person who is a responsible gun owner. And most hunters don't need giant arsenals. |
Define giant and arsenal. Most hunters do have multiple guns. |
Yeah 6-8 guns doesn’t qualify as a giant arsenal in my mind. |
There are a lot of posters on here who think differently. So please quantify what you mean. An arsenal to me means thousands of rounds of ammo and a hundred guns. |
An arsenal to me means more guns than you actually use for a specific purpose on an annual basis. So if you go duck hunting a couple of times a year and deer hunting a couple of times a year and pheasant hunting and squab hunting once or twice and shoot clay pigeons recreationally, how many guns do you need for that? Not 8+. What is the purpose of the extra guns? Do you think they are fun? Do you delude yourself that you will defend yourself against the government with them (a lot of people actually think this way)? Are they for "home defense," even though the data show that they do not actually reduce your risk of being shot and likely increase it? |
Have you ever shot a gun before? It’s not true that a gun is a gun is a gun... Why, for example, would a motorcycle rider or someone Who drives a car want more than one? Or why do people want more rings than they could possibly even wear at once? Why do you need a second black pair of pumps you will never wear if you already have a pair (that you never wear, lol)? Yes hunters need different guns. Or hey, they may just want different guns, maybe a couple of a certain kind. If you’re a target shooter like me, I like having a .22 because ammo is cheap and you can shoot the gun for an hour and not get tired. But then I may want the same caliber in a smaller size (I have a long gun). Or, since I currently like shooting just with iron sights, I may get a second of the same gun to see how accurate I can get with a scope. It’s not like people are allowed to have just one gun or two guns max, and anything more automatically means they are a nut. I wouldn’t even say guns are my primary hobby, but we have 6. |
|
Why do you care how many guns people have, as long as they are properly stored and handled? I don’t think people who can’t properly handle and store guns should have ANY. It doesn’t make me feel safer that tons of people who “need” a gun for self defense only have one gun.
The safest gun owners I know actually have 8+ guns and you’d never even know they shot recreationally unless you’d gotten to know them really well. |
| ^ This is 20:27. I should add that none of these people I know are buying guns to defend themselves against the government. That is insane. |
