DC Public and Public Charter Schools
There is a Starbucks, it's very popular with Wilson kids, and you can see them on any given day after school sitting around there with some expensive coffee treat. There's a Panera a couple of stores down that's also mobbed with Wilson students every day after school. Neither store has ever stopped table service from 3 to 4:30.

And what exactly do you know about the environment at Wilson? Have you been in the building? Have you talked to the kids? I ask because the school population that I see described in threads like this one bears absolutely no resemblance to the kids that I see every time I am actually at the school. I had concerns about security before DS started there. I am less concerned every time I am in the building. |
The only reason suburban schools start at 7:45 (which is later than the prior 7:25) is that they have to have staggered times for ES, MS and HS, so that buses can do multiple runs. Multiple runs are a huge cost savings to the system. A choice was made decades ago that having HSers go to school in the dark was safer than having ESers walk to school in the dark. And having HSers be home first also helped those families who needed older kids to provide aftercare for younger ones. DC doesn't have these problems. Everyone goes to school on public transporation (except sped) and so all schools start at the time. School thus starts at the same time in all schools and at a time that coincides with the normal work day. And, yes, kids & parents in the suburbs are envious .... |
Those people (meaning the people who live in Cleveland park) will complain about anything and everything. |
I'm not envious of DC schools. |
Neither the Tenleytown Metro nor Wilson for the Chick Fil-A are in Cleveland Park. And for that matter, most "members" of the Cleveland Park list serv aren't either. That list serv became the de facto Northwest DC list serve 10 or 15 years ago, although activity on it has also dropped in recent years. |
Sadly, I've also seen these students harrassing Panera customers. I am sure that Panera managers sometimes wish they could institute some sort of policy |
"those people"? |
Love the solution of playing classical music to discourage teen loitering. |

Just curious- did Wilson and Deal open recently? No right? So it seems that all the poor pearl-clutchers on the Cleveland Park listserv and here were on notice that there was a high
School and middle school nearby. Also I'm pretty sure that if you ARE zoned for Deal/Wilson you make an enormous deal about it because it's a boost to your home price. So take the good with the bad and suck it up. FWIW, I have never met ruder people in my life than the aging boomers of NW DC. You people are acting like Wilson and Deal opened last year against your will. |
They don't object to students, they object to AA students who they assume are from other parts of the city and don't belong in their neighborhood school. |
Always keeping it classy NW DC |
"nearby" is certainly a relative term here.. |
How so? Clearly you're walking distance. |
I am in the Panera by Wilson at least once a week after school, and I have never seen Wilson students harassing anyone. |
