how many of us did not see close MAGA family members this holiday season?

You must be MAGA - hateful disgusting people, the lot of you, wishing pain on anyone who doesn’t think like you.

Wow, the irony considering the topic of this thread. You have zero self-awareness.

Your post makes no sense. Talk about lack of self-awareness.

This thread is about avoiding toxic people who, in this case, happen to have their MAGA nonsense as part of that toxicity. Avoiding people who treat you like crap and are jerks, even when they are relatives, is not equal to wishing pain on anyone who does not think like you. These are vastly different things.

But we know logic, reason, decency, and critical thinking are not part of the MAGA way of life.

Emotional pain is real for aging parents with cognitive and physical decline. It's not the time to cut them out of one's life over how they voted, barring physical or emotional abuse from childhood.

Or barring emotional abuse in the here and now. Have you read anything the OP has written? You are talking out of turn here. This is not simply about who you voted for. It's about patterns of abusive behavior. No one has to tolerate that, no matter how old the jerk is.

"The jerk" may have dementia or other mental and physical issues that come with aging.

And they have the right to vote for a destructive dictator in that condition. Someone who could get us all killed. Just great for the rest of us under 80 if there are hundreds of thousands of them headed to the polls in 2028.

Give it up. If they were jerks before and they are jerks now, no one is obligated to put up with them no matter their age or relation. Full stop. They made their bed.

If you'd like to go spend time with them, by all means...

I'm not the one defending abusers and victim blaming.

You lost this one, sparky. Go get some sleep and recharge that pea brain to fight for the rights of jerks everywhere another day!

My wife's family is pure MAGA. They hate me and never speak to me. I'm glad.

There is no obligation to put up with family smearing a get together w lies and overt oppressive ideals. Life is too short.
I would maybe have a relationship w maga parents if they didn’t talk politics but I would certainly not respect them as much. It would be difficult.
If they spewed their maga garbage once- done.

Such drama over making s phone call to elderly parents over the holidays. Very, very sad.

80 year old people don't vote for 80 year old candidates. They know better. Unless the 80 year old is too senile to realize who they're voting for.

They wouldn’t keep posting if they weren’t personally affected. I’d be willing to bet that their family cut them off and they still think that they have some high ground. You can tell by their replies that they are insufferable so I don’t blame their family one bit.

Anonymous wrote:OP here. There is hurt that is deeper than just them being MAGA. Last spring my spouse who is a high ranking fed came very close to losing his job during all the DOGE insanity (and did lose more than 100 direct reports) and my dad said they were all redundant because well, Fox News told him so. We had a huge blow up over this.
And perhaps the most toxic part is that they every time we're with my parents we're handed a long, typed out letter about how we are going to hell. My parents have always been religious but in their old age it's been escalated to deep fear of eternal damnation. The letters ares all about how they fear for our souls and at holiday gatherings (for the past 2-3 years) before eating we have to listen to a 30 minute talk about it all. In the context of the MAGA beliefs this is just all too much. Their political beliefs make them about the least Jesus-like people we know and yet they never shut up about their faith. I just can't.

This is abuse, full stop. You don’t owe people like this anything, not even if they birthed you, and ESPECIALLY if they birthed you. Family owes you more care, not less.

By keeping your distance, maybe you can salvage a decent memory after they’re gone, remember them from a time when they presumably weren’t such nasty horrible creatures. My heart is with you. It’s time to start mourning them as if they’re already gone.

Apple doesn't fall from the tree. PP's children will say the same about them 30 years from now.

Oh look. Nasty grandma found the thread.

What a horrible (and unfounded) thing to say. Shame on you.

I’m not a grandmother nor MAGA, but that is a reasonable possibility. Children learn behavior from their parents. All these people who have cut their parents off over political differences are teaching their kids that sort of tantrum-like behavior is acceptable. And it is indeed likely to be repeated.

+ 1 million

Again, as has been pointed out, no one has proposed stepping away from family over political differences. We are talking about maga as a hate group. It’s no different than if your relative was in the Klan or an antisemite.

Family like that deserves to be ostracized. It’s no one’s job to babysit emotionally immature relatives.

I’m the PP and I am sorry, but you sound completely insane to me. You are seriously saying that anyone who voted for Trump is equivalent to a KKK member? That is not grounded in any sort of reality.

It seems you have a reading comprehension problem. No one here has said they cut off family members for voting republican. There is a portion of MAGA that is definitely a hate group similar to KKK. If you don’t know this then you have your head in the sand.

Oh, so you are fine with people voting for Trump then?

Yes. I highly dislike Trump and MAGA but I also respect the choice to vote for whomever they please.

Anonymous wrote:I hope OP is a troll. If not, I feel very sorry for that family. I bet the parents sacrificed a lot for their kids.

and now they support someone who is impacting the livelihood for said kids whom they supposedly sacrificed a lot for. It makes one wonder whether those parents even respect OP's job and livelihood.

My parents are immigrants, came here in the early 70s on a chain migration. They worked blue collar jobs all their lives and barely speak English. If I supported a policy that wanted to kick out people who can't speak English past a 1st grade level that would make me an awful person since it would impact my parents.

This is the other way around: OP's parents support policies that are hurting their livelihood. That makes them pretty awful.

Pretty sad, really. Are you so insecure in your positions that you are fearful of defending them?

that's because Dems aren't the ones who support a criminal and are morally corrupt. I don't like a lot of Dem policies, but I do think their hearts are in the right place, if not the country's pocketbook.

Sometimes the cult runs so deep that no amount of logic or reason can cut through the brainwashed pretzel thought process of a MAGA.

I mean, how else can you explain Trump giving Argentina billions, allowing them to import their beef here, all while American farmers suffer, and MAGA still cheer him on?

It's a cult.
