Boycotting the World Cup

No fans are more committed than soccer fans, but they have their limits. And they would be much safer catching a match in Canada or Mexico.

I have been watching hotel rates, just out of curiosity. They are starting to come down and plenty of rooms available.

They are going to fly into Mexico with the angry cartel guys looking to cause problems? They have shoulder fired heat seeking missiles, a lot more dangerous than whatever city has ICE raids.

I think you are underestimating how dangerous the US is right now. Maybe the WC low attendance rates will be a wake-up call for a lot of Americans.

Yea, better than being detained indefinitely in an ICE facility.

Will Americans really notice on the whole? It isn’t even a big deal (still!) to the soccer kids I know. Host cities are a different story.

Host cities are counting on the tourism revenue. The US has been bleeding tourists since January 2025. Not sure why.

You should stop by a sports bar during a match. You’ll see.

I said the host cities will notice. I'm not sure about the general population as soccer/football is still not a huge deal in the US.

These people are not intelligent if they believe they’ll be snatched at a World Cup match. The areas around those matches will be the safest places for immigrants to be. There is no way Trump would allow ICE to do sweeps there. The World Cup is one of Trump’s Crown Jewels. He’d never allow a worldwide spectacle to be disrupted. Besides, like a Super Bowl, corporations and businesses people are buying up all of the tickets. Stadiums will be sold out.

And? For whatever reason, this country wants to give everything to the wealthy. There's TV and sports bars for the rest of the peons.

I’m sorry you have an anxiety disorder. Have you considered seeking treatment?

Did you vote for trump......because I hope you are seeking help for whatever delusions and psychosis you are clearly dealing with.

I didn’t vote for Trump. I apparently understand the draw of the World Cup better than posters here that hope it fails because, Trump.

NP. I have several football fanatics in my family and friends circle (I'm brown). None are planning to go to any matches although some live in cities where matches are held. They say no match is worth the risk of potentially being tossed in some detention facility or deported, although they are all in the country legally, just POC. Same goes for family overseas that were planning to come for the World Cup, but don't consider it worthwhile making the trip (even before the war).

+1 I have family in Europe who were planning to come and have canceled. Of course they did. Who would want to come to the US right now?

You are promising people of color will be safe and you think anyone will believe you?!

You said the same thing about the Trump administration detaining immigrants who were in the US legally and at least 50 of them were sent to a torture prison in El Salvador. You said the same about people with Green cards being safe and yet they are being detained and even deported. You said the same thing about White tourists -- legal European, Canadian, white tourists -- and they are being locked up for months at a time, some of them grandparents, deprived of basic medical care and comforts. But most of all, you said American citizens were safe and yet they are routinely detained and some of them even killed.

So spare me the sanctimony. No one trusts this administration, not even the administration's selfishness or wish to make a profit, nor should they.

As a foreigner, I don't believe people will avoid the World Cup because they fear being snatched by ICE, they just won't want to go to the US because of everything that has happened/is happening: trade war launched against the whole world, threats to take the territory of a NATO ally, insults to the soldiers who shed blood for the US, now the US is destroying the world economy. People are just done with the US.

"Softer Booking Trends Prompt Strategy Shift

Early booking trends also show that demand is coming in lower than expected. In some markets, hotels have reported picking up only a small portion of previously reserved FIFA room blocks, with estimates as low as 15% occupancy for those allocations. As a result, many operators are shifting away from rigid event-based pricing strategies and reopening inventory to general travelers."

But spectators will have to stay in hotels, go out to eat.. and ICE seem to have free reign to round up anyone they feel like it, even US citizens.

FIFA got too greedy on pricing at the same time as foreign demand for US travel is at an all time low, inflation is growing and the outlook for the world economy isn't optimistic.
