Boycotting the World Cup

I’m boycotting — at least for now — because it’s too dang expensive. Since Trump is going to deny a lot of fans visas to attend, maybe prices will come down.

I'm just certain your silly boycotts really affect... someone. Somewhere.

I am a Canadian, and this is a joint Canada-Mexico-USA World Cup event.

You Americans, who just think about NFL football, are so narrow minded. Football (ie soccer) is huge across the globe. You have immigrant populations in your country who will follow these teams. Do you think they will attend the games in the US when ICE is around? Trump kept touting that ticket sales are off the charts. I doubt it for the US:

FIFA is corrupt.

However, your elected government does not believe in NAFTA. Do you know what that even means for the ignoramus? In Canada, the only are shouldering stupid tariffs because of Trump’s fragile ego.

How so?

He does have a point. Soccer is played almost exclusively with the feet - so, football.

American football is played almost exclusively with the hands. Only one or two players actually kick the ball.

He was just stating facts.

He’s stating facts that everyone else has already stated a million times before. He probably thinks he’s the first one to ever have thought of it.

Football is football and is played with a football. Soccer is soccer and is played with a soccer ball. No one is changing anything.

Soccer is boring. Football isn’t. Ticket sales tells you all you need to know

I can't afford the tickets anyway... is that boycotting?

They do, thanks for noticing.

Are you still mad about Kimmel?

I suspect the American stadiums are going to have a tough time filling seats - especially during the early rounds. Absolutely no one on the planet wants to deal with ICE and American immigration these days. The media in every country is filled with stories of very legal tourists getting detained or expelled for no reason whatsoever. Plus Trump is universally despised. The US is not an attractive destination these days. The tourism numbers have collapsed over the past ten months.

Plus FIFA or US Soccer or whoever is responsible for ticket prices has completely overreached when it comes to ticket prices. The prices are absurd. No one is spending $4000 for a middling seat to watch Haiti-Morocco in Atlanta.

American soccer is equivalent to lower leagues in Europe. Every time Premier League teams come to America they sell out football stadiums. I love football, but there’s A LOT of downtime in a game. That’s boring.

ICE won’t even be in the same states as World Cup matches in June and July. Trump isn’t dumb enough to tarnish a worldwide spectacle. He’s a businessman and this is big business.

The funny thing is, imagine if soccer were even a tier 2 sport in America. Imagine how the US would dominate the world. I mean it's pretty impressive the US can even field a decently ranked national team every year when literally the top 50% of American athletes are playing other sports.

Agree. Amazing how countries like Ireland and Ivory Coast can compete in Soccer against The US.

The funny thing is that “tier 2” USMNT and D1 soccer athletes are included in the top 50% of American athletes. You can try to disprove it, but when you consider VO2 max, BMI, HRV, RSI, plus movement and load metrics it’s incontrovertible. Top athletes compete for more than 8 seconds at a time with the luxury of recovery time after each play.

This.
People are not going to come from overseas and I don’t know that there are a lot of American fans.

America certainly has the athletes to be competitive in any sport. But the reason why we don't compete in soccer is because of the culture. It's terrible at every level. Almost no good athlete chooses soccer today. And FIFA and Trump having a love-fest certainly doesn't help.

Dirty, corrupt sport.
