Of course. But this is not the issue at dispute here. The lunatics are attacking those who go to top 20. |
What lunatics? Where? |
OP-I think the problem I have with your view point-(and see this across DCUM on various subjects) is that you can’t fathom that someone thinks differently than you. Therefore you must disparage others (and their kids) as liars/too stupid/unaware/jealous. |
Heavily agree with this. A lot of DCUMs love statements like "We ALL want our kids to go to an ivy" or "Who wouldn't want their kid to go to the best possible college?" and their idea of best possible is who is on the USNWR's top 10. We all have different perspectives on what is healthy and should be important for our children, and I wish this was more respected. |
A) Because it's YOUR want. Is it your kid's? B) Lots of high-performing kids don't get into their choice schools, good schools, etc. So best adjust your expectations now. C) Lots of high-performing kids choose "non-top" schools for lots of other reasons. My child got into a top 15 school at $90K/year, which we would have handled if that was the choice (the school gives no merit b/c it doesn't have to-kids are clamoring to go there b/c of the name). But is going to a small private in-state school for 1/4 that cost and will have grad school nearly funded as a result. People would dump on the school but for what DC wants, bachelors doesn't mean much in terms of the "where" it was earned, and school places kids in grad programs all the time. So go ahead and pay that price tag and feel smug about it. Meanwhile, I know my very smart kid made a smarter, and very mature decision, considering more than just prestige. |
What??? |
OP, can you point to specific posts where a parent was “attacked,” or treated like they were committing a “crime,” or told they were doing a “horrible thing” for hoping their kid gets into a top school?
I have seen posters express concerns about the mental health impact of focusing narrowly on the most elite schools. I’ve seen posters talk about the high price of private education. I’ve seen culture war criticism of “woke” ivies, especially in the context of campus protests. I’ve also seen plenty of parents express happiness with other paths, as well an awareness that there are many ways to get good education and have a good life. But these “attacks” you reference…I guess I just haven’t seen them. They sound pretty bad, the way you describe them. Can you point to some? |
I am not OP. But those attacks are quite common here on DCUM. In the past week I have seen post like "does s/he hates you now, or are you still working toward that ..." These are obvious ones. There are a lot more that are less direct but insinuating or assuming it's all parents wanting kids to go to top colleges. In reality it's both or in some cases I have seen it's the kid. These are people who dominate forums like college confidential. Now they have crawled their way over here. |
I doubt too many parents tutor their teens. Teens are not interested in working with parents at this stage for the most part. The issue with tutors is pushy parents who aren’t satisfied that their child is placed in a level 2 math class based on his ability. They can’t stand it so they get the level 1 material and hire a tutor to spend hours trying to push the child past what he can handle. But he’s moved up, works with a tutor on a daily basis, gets in the level 1. Mom’s happy, kid’s miserable. |
+1000 |
This thread just shows how insufferable DCUM can be. I'm glad most don't get into ivies from here. I'd hate to run into shit parents like many on here. |
You do you — you want top schools for your kids, go for it. But your assumption is not true. In fact, lots of parents who went to Ivies or equivalent have a healthy understanding of what the importance of undergrad is in terms of life outcome, and it is not that much. |
I want my kids
1AAA) have Christ in their lives 1) to be healthy 2) to be kind 3) to be attractive 4) to be fertile and have choices 5) to be hard workers 6) to be smart 7) to be focused 8) to get whatever education they need to do what they want for work. The only schools I am moderately impressed by are Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Annapolis, Hopkins, West Point, MIT and Stanford All others are fighting for king crap of turd mountain to me but they serve their purpose. |
Hmmm…you sound like a sane person with your 8 rules. |
Sadly agree. I’ve stopped coming here so much bc of the toxcity of one poster…maybe it’s more than one. |
