Why is it such a crime to want your child to get into a top school? Obviously “top” can mean different things, but whether it’s HYPSM or Ivies or even T50s, it shouldn’t be a horrible thing for parents to want their children to meet certain academic standards. It’s annoyed when people are attacked for wanting their kids to get a good education. My hypothesis is that the people criticizing these parents are the parents of children who aren’t high-achieving enough to get into good schools. Otherwise, why does it matter to them so much? Thoughts?
A) Because it's YOUR want. Is it your kid's? B) Lots of high-performing kids don't get into their choice schools, good schools, etc. So best adjust your expectations now. C) Lots of high-performing kids choose "non-top" schools for lots of other reasons. My child got into a top 15 school at $90K/year, which we would have handled if that was the choice (the school gives no merit b/c it doesn't have to-kids are clamoring to go there b/c of the name). But is going to a small private in-state school for 1/4 that cost and will have grad school nearly funded as a result. People would dump on the school but for what DC wants, bachelors doesn't mean much in terms of the "where" it was earned, and school places kids in grad programs all the time. So go ahead and pay that price tag and feel smug about it. Meanwhile, I know my very smart kid made a smarter, and very mature decision, considering more than just prestige.
