Salma was born in and grew up in Mexico. Also, her dad is Lebanese but had been in Mexico a long time, was a well known businessman and politician there. It's not like he'd just immigrated from Lebanon when she was born. Her mom is Spanish, not Lebanese. Salma attended a private Catholic school in the US from 12-18, but she spent holidays and summers in Mexico with her family. She went to a Mexican university. She then started her career in Mexico and all her early roles were in Mexican telenovelas and films, all Spanish-speaking. It was only once she was fairly successful in Mexican cinema that she got her first Hollywood roles and wound up immigrating to the US.

I am fairly certain that Salma has made an effort to retain her accent after years of living in the US. Yes, it is part of her brand and there are good financial reasons to retain it. This is SUPER common in Hollywood and not restricted to someone from Mexico. Matthew McConaughey has intentionally maintained his accent. So has Jodi Foster. Tina Fey has a very recognizable way of speaking that includes some Pennsylvania vowels and pronunciations. All of these people recognize their voice is part of their public persona and even though they have spent years living among people who do NOT talk like that, they've held onto their accents. My dad is Texan but hasn't lived there in 50 years. He still has a Texas accent.

But Hilary did not naturally develop a Spanish accent growing up in Spain. She has an American accent because she grew up in Boston, and then she decided, as an adult, to adopt a Spanish accent and change her name to Hilaria. She is not even very good at retaining her accent -- as many have pointed out, it comes and goes in interviews and sometimes it's really heavy ("how you say?") and other times she just sounds American (in the Romper video, about 70% of it, there is no accent, and only the brief portion where she speaks Spanish to her kids is the accent even pronounced).

Salma Hayek is a Mexican immigrant. Hilary Baldwin is an American grifter. Let's not pretend these things are the same.

Not to derail, but it's Jodie, and she was born and raised in Los Angeles. Are you thinking of someone else? Maybe another petite Oscar winner, Holly Hunter, who was born in Georgia?

She still has a very specific and recognizable way of speaking that is probably, to some extent, a put on. But yeah, Holly Hunter would be another example of someone who has retained a very identifiable regional accent despite not having lived there for decades.

The point is that it's one thing for someone to retain their actual accent from their youth in order to maintain their brand as an actor. It's something else entirely to just pretend you are from another country, adopt an accent you've never had before, and change your name in order to convince people you are an exotic foreigner. None of the actors mentioned (including Salma Hayek) adopted their accents as adults in order to make money. And Salma is a native Spanish speaker, unlike Hilary.

All of this is a distraction from the fact that Hilary is a nut job who has faked her entire backstory and persona in order to land a rich husband, and everyone knows it, but both she and her husband maintain the ruse anyway. It's crazy!

Being born in Mexico doesn't make you ethnically Mexican or Spanish, if she was even born in Mexico, which we have no way of even verifying. Those old timer wealthy Lebanese in Mexico tended to marry their own, especially 60 or 70 years ago.

But that's really besides the point. Salma is very fair skinned and Salma was educated from at least the age of 12 to 18 in U.S. private schools. So why when she came on the scene in the 1990s did she pretend to have a broken American accent in all of her interviews and brown her skin with a lot of makeup?

YOU ALL brought up Salma, saying she was the inspiration for Hilaria to bag Alec. I just think it's funny that you think Hilaria is such a fraudulent grifter but refuse to acknowledge Salma might have built a career off similar.

so then, to your point, Hillary IS a fraud and used Salma as her blueprint?

I just think they're both strivers; one who sought a career in Hollywood, one who sought a Hollywood husband. To demonize one over the other is pretty hypocritical. Entertainment is full of strivers who creatively "reinvented" themselves and distort their background. I simply don't care. But some of you REALLY care about Hilaria, who isn't even a famous person.

"Pliz leaf our family in peas!" is what she said in her fake accent.

Now she wants to invite a film crew into her home to film them all of the time?

Those poor, poor children.

No, no, she asks them to leave her femelly in piss.

Omfg this thread has me howling.

Omg! That story broke in December, 2020. I remember, because I was so tremendously entertained, having always low-key loathed this woman due to her weird, self-obsessed pregnant bikini selfies, to read about her fake Spanish heritage. A twitter user was credited with outing her but here I see DCUM sniffed it out in MAY. Impressed.

Hilaria is hardly alone in posting sleazy thirst traps on social media. Look at filthy rich pro golfer Brooks Koepka's wife, Jena Sims, and the scandalous photos she posted while pregnant. Full booty in a thong. Sleaze.

Yep. And comments were getting deleted. Ppl suspected Alec’s PR made/encouraged it.

A source tells PEOPLE that Alec and Hilaria Baldwin would only do reality TV "if it was an authentic portrayal of who they are"

Meh. I think there's a difference between a striver and a grifter. Hilaria took it way too far. That's why people talk about her.

They are telegraphing that they will do it only if they get Final Cut. Probably a stipulation imposed by Alec’s attorneys given his legal situation.

I can't stand Hillary but I'd watch just to see how she does maintaining her fake accent over a 30 or 60 minute show. Also interested to see if there's any hint the older kids are onto her BS yet -- I'd love to watch them figure out their mom was a fraud on television!

I don't even care that it would make them money. Those kids are going to need it for all the therapy they'll be in after dad kicks it and Hillary hits middle age and can't find another sugar daddy who will take on the 8 of them. It's like charity, really.

Ouch
