Salma was born in and grew up in Mexico. Also, her dad is Lebanese but had been in Mexico a long time, was a well known businessman and politician there. It's not like he'd just immigrated from Lebanon when she was born. Her mom is Spanish, not Lebanese. Salma attended a private Catholic school in the US from 12-18, but she spent holidays and summers in Mexico with her family. She went to a Mexican university. She then started her career in Mexico and all her early roles were in Mexican telenovelas and films, all Spanish-speaking. It was only once she was fairly successful in Mexican cinema that she got her first Hollywood roles and wound up immigrating to the US.

I am fairly certain that Salma has made an effort to retain her accent after years of living in the US. Yes, it is part of her brand and there are good financial reasons to retain it. This is SUPER common in Hollywood and not restricted to someone from Mexico. Matthew McConaughey has intentionally maintained his accent. So has Jodi Foster. Tina Fey has a very recognizable way of speaking that includes some Pennsylvania vowels and pronunciations. All of these people recognize their voice is part of their public persona and even though they have spent years living among people who do NOT talk like that, they've held onto their accents. My dad is Texan but hasn't lived there in 50 years. He still has a Texas accent.

But Hilary did not naturally develop a Spanish accent growing up in Spain. She has an American accent because she grew up in Boston, and then she decided, as an adult, to adopt a Spanish accent and change her name to Hilaria. She is not even very good at retaining her accent -- as many have pointed out, it comes and goes in interviews and sometimes it's really heavy ("how you say?") and other times she just sounds American (in the Romper video, about 70% of it, there is no accent, and only the brief portion where she speaks Spanish to her kids is the accent even pronounced).

Salma Hayek is a Mexican immigrant. Hilary Baldwin is an American grifter. Let's not pretend these things are the same.

They're not remotely comparable.
Salma is Mexican (with Lebanese heritage on her father's side), full stop.

I do believe that she had a more privileged upbringing than she admits and I also believe that she has exaggerated her accent. (Sophia Vergara does as well, and all the others you mentioned). She wouldn't be married to Pinault if she was the truly as she presented herself to American audiences earlier in her career. She's very well educated and comes from a very privileged background.

Where do you stand on Louis CK being Mexican? First language, Spanish. Spent childhood in Mexico.

DP not the crazy anti-Salma Hayek person but since this whole Hilaria episode I find myself kind of annoyed by Salma Hayek’s exaggerated accent. My husband was watching some random YouTube clip of her and it all felt so gross considering her actual background- Salma Hayek acts VERY cartoonish in interviews. She is doing this portrayal of a sexy ditzy Latina or something and it made me uncomfortable.

Maybe the "lunatics who obsess" fit your characterization, but maybe there are also perfectly sane people with a good life and children who find the Baldwin situation interesting.

Find some sources that her mum was actually ethnic Mexican / Hispanic descent. Highly unlikely a rich Lebanese businessman would ever marry some random Mexican peasant. It’s probably all a pre internet con. So if it’s no big deal that she misrepresented herself and appropriated a bogus Mexican peasant / Hispanic background pre internet, then who freaking cares about the yoga instructor.

Is this the same wacky poster who posts this trifle on the multiple Hillary threads- or is more than one person actually this mental that they value women based on their ability to breed and marry rich/make 'cute' kids?

Because I have a few kids-inarguably cuter- I realize this is subjective- but sometimes it's really not, sabes? I birthed/breastfed them all, do well financially- and KNOW that none of that matters as far as your value as a human.

People don't like dirty liars.

The rich Lebanese living in Mexico married each other. See Carlos Slim https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carlos_Slim

Not all Mexicans are peasants. Maybe her mom was a rich Mexican woman. I have no idea and don't care. Salma was born and raised in Mexico. And yes, I do think that she exaggerated her accent. But it has nothing to do with "Hilaria", who was born and raised in Boston, spent like two weeks of her life in Spain and decided to pretend she's Spanish. Back when the story exploded a few years ago, some of her former yoga students were here, talking about how their teacher Hilary came back from a vacation and suddenly spoke differently and called herself Hilaria.

Also, Salma is an actress. Hilaria literally sat at the UN as some kind of Spanish representative.

I’m sure Salma’s US private school classmates would have said similar when she was pretending to speak broken English in the 90s. But this was pre internet.

Salma haters - guess what - THIS IS NOT ABOUT SALMA!! This is about FRAUDWIN Hillary - who went on the UN counsel - claiming to be FROM SPAIN - when all she did was SINGLE WHITE FEMALE her SIL, who is an actual Spaniard.

(her brother married a girl from Spain. Hillary went to the wedding and came back with an accent/name change).

Please stop derailing the upcoming reality tv show thread with your deflecting to Salma. NO ONE CARES!

I'm so confused. Salma Hayek's mother, Diana Jiménez Medina, is lying about being Mexican?

Not to derail, but it's Jodie, and she was born and raised in Los Angeles. Are you thinking of someone else? Maybe another petite Oscar winner, Holly Hunter, who was born in Georgia?
