PG Pool

White people had all of the money. If they didn’t tax businesses because they were owned by whites then there wouldn’t have been a tax base.

The county sold land for $15 to build a whites only pool. Then, apparently, under assessed this land for decades. Seems like text book structural racism.

For a supposedly progressive pool, PG Pool is shockingly unaware of racism. Sheesh

So if the pool’s taxes go up, who should pay? All the members of the pool or only the white ones? Why should AA families have to pay higher membership fees for this racism?

You missed the point. There is a legitimate concern about this pools racist past and its current waitlist. That is not the issue.

The issue is why this pool has a crazy low assessed value, which tends to impact yearly taxes owed.

Also, I’m not on the waitlist so all the PG Pool trolls and can chill out on that other irrelevant point!

The majority black county should join a waitlist?

Yes. The wait list is open to the public. Anyone can join. It currently does not discriminate in any way.

The pool is located at the meeting point of three jurisdictions: DC, PG and Montgomery county, just blocks away from the border of each. Thus it draws people from all over.

PG Pool is the epitome of hypocritical white, privileged, progressives. It's really gross.

It's true when I moved here ten years ago, the UMC moms in our lovely, diverse, and absurdly affluent girl scout troop all told me to put our name on the wait-list.

I didn't, we joined Parkland Pool in Kemp Mills, which has no wait list and is laid back.

Sucks for you. There's a reason the waitlist is so long. You are probably one of the locals trying to get in now.

Please share the last time you stepped into our county. I’ll wait.

Last time? When I drove to the private pool that you are waiting 10+ years to desperately join. lol

Anonymous wrote:About fourteen years ago it was very easy for anyone to join the PG pool. In fact, the pool members were looking for more people to join and help with maintenance thru work days. Cheverly and PG pool are the most accessible private pools to Capitol Hill. As the hill population grew those private pools became very popular and filled to capacity. That’s all that happened. The pools in the suburbs also have waitlists that are years long. I don’t know why this is made into a racial issue every year.

This. The waitlist didn't even start until 2012. Before that the pool was desperate for members and, from what I understand, almost closed.

Who cares about the waitlist?

The property should be revalued at a fair market assessment.

It’s odd that you can’t find a pool that’s not in a “crummy county” to join.

I don't know much about PG Pool specifically, but i think you may be unaware of the documented ways racism worked "back then" (I'm talking early 20th century). Black-owned properties were over-assessed to raise taxes so high people would have to sell to whites. It wasn't just about the tax base, taxation was absolutely used as a redlining tool.

Lots of people from the Hill belong to that pool. I don’t think there are any private pools in DC, so PG pool and Cheverly are where people go from the Hill.
